MerReady - OK, thank you for that. The board is an MSI 7061 Ver 1.0. It's running perfectly well at the moment in a test rig I've set up for it using IDE drives - I wanted to find out if it had problems not related to the SATA controller, but it's running well so it seems not. I'll flash the BIOS (there are BIOS updates available for it) and see how things go then. As I pointed out earlier, the heats off and over now as I put together what was virtually another machine for the lady who owned this and who is well-happy with things now. Once I've flashed the BIOS I'll come back here.

OK - BIOS is now successfully flashed with a BIOS which specifically - so MSI says - was to upgrade the SATA firmware. But it aint done me no good. SATA drives are still not recognized by the BIOS or - obviously, PCLOS. And this was with a new install from the latest ISO of Gnome. So now, thank you guys for your help and advice, but I really have no more time to spend on this. Some you win, some you lose. This mobo will, henceforth, carry only IDE drives.
