Problem Unmounting USB Drive in Thunar
« on: November 21, 2010, 10:52:10 AM »
I use the LXDE desktop but would like to use Thunar instead of PCFMan for my file manager. I am having a problem with Thunsar when I try to unmount a USB drive. I get a popup window message that says:

Writing data to device
There is data that needs to be written to the device "Transcend" before it can be removed.
Please do not remove the media or disconnect the drive.

It asks me to say "OK" or "Cancel".

At the same time, a separate notify window comes up that says it is okay to remove the device.

I did not perform any operations on the USB drive so I do not understand how it could be be writing data.

Is the USB drive safe to remove with these conflicting messages? Does anyone have any ideas on how to prevent the pop-up message from showing up?

I do have thunar-volman installed.

Thank you.

I have seen similar in KDE lately .......  it appears that the first popup comes because the USB device has not yet been 'released' after the last viewing of its contents, but it then appears to be released almost immediately resulting in the second message that it is OK to withdraw the device.

Out of experience I can tell you that once the brown message tells you it is safe it always has been with me.

Some or other program is pulling in Gnome-Notifier (or something in that vein) most unnecessarily (I believe), which than takes over the notifying.  You might also pick that up once you start playing music or listen to a shoutcast.

Thanks for the replies. I am glad to have some re-assurance that I can remove the USB without causing damage.  :)

I prefer to wait until the "safe to remove" message disappears, just for good measure, and then I right-click the icon for the flash drive to make sure that "Mount Volume" instead of "Unmount Volume" appears in the menu.  If it does, then I know I'm good to go.  Yeah, I may be a little paranoid, but I like to make sure, as I did bork a flash drive here while back.
