Playing with PowerTOP
« on: November 16, 2010, 04:06:37 PM »
Apologies if people already know about it, but I've just got a rather power-hungry laptop to sort out and I've stumbled across PowerTOP, a small CLI application for helping to tune laptop power consumption. An interesting little program, and probably very useful. More info. Developed by Intel originally and now maintained by Debian, it seems. Not sure what chipsets/processors it supports. I have Intel here.

The reason I'm discussing it here and not in Packaging or Package Suggest is that it needs different kernel configuration from the default pclos kernels, so it's of limited use to the average user at present. Still, I've built an SRPM and dropped it into the dropbox if anyone would like to try it out. You can also get my SRPM at http://www.instabook.com/pclos/SRPMS/powertop-1.13-1pclos2010.src.rpm or a binary at http://www.instabook.com/pclos/RPMS/powertop-1.13-1pclos2010.i586.rpm.

This package is already in the testing section since Aug.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Whoops!

In that case I'll replace the one I've built with the official one and contribute to testing it.
