(Solved) KDM/Kde 4.5/Gnome/System-Wide Font settings in PCLOS
« on: November 16, 2010, 07:39:26 AM »
Hi all :)

I am new to PCLOS, so far it fits best to my requirements after trying out a lot of major distros..

The only problem am facing is with fonts..I want to know the system in PCLOS to manage the fonts systemwide(?)

I love KDE and so far I've used only KDE in previous distros that I've tried, and in all the distros I tried, the font settings from Systemsettings governed the size of fonts for KDE except gtk, for which engine like gtk-kde4 is required..but in PCLOS if I change the KDE menu font to say 9 then only the menu font in toolbars are set to size 9, however the menu generated by right click on desktop will be of size 10 and the menu when clicked on taskbar will be of size 10. To unify them I have to force DPI settings, something I never needed before.

The gtk-kde4 works ok for theme colours and icons but the font wont change to desired size...Also the fonts in GTK apps like chromium looks jagged but KDE fonts look nice.

Also if I change the settings for KDM from Systemsettings, all the fonts are reset back to size 11 and type-Sans Serif, then have to reconfigure the fonts..

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Heya kapz, welcome to PCLinuxOS and also to the forum.  :)

I don't use chromium but when I set the fonts on my system, I have to set the fonts for my browser separately (Opera). Does chromium have it's own font settings? This is the same with some other applications, they have their own font settings which aren't affected when you set the KDE fonts in the system settings.

Chromium does indeed have its own fonts, albeit not so easy to find. Click on the wrench (spanner) in the upper right hand corner and choose Preferences>Under the hood. Then scroll down to Fonts and pick what you like.

Thanks timeth & ElCuervo , but my concern is with the fonts in tool bar and menus of gtk apps...also the strange thing of fonts being reset to default values if I access KDM options from systemsettings, I want to find the cause...

mmm.. can someone also confirm if the menu font setting has been separated for toolbar and desktop in KDE 4.5?
coz 4.4 applies the same font settings for all type of menus.

Have the same issue here when trying changing KDM settings:
1) KDE the goes to (almost) default theme (also font settings).
2) KDE goes to the english language again (have it in dutch so have to set in dutch language again or have to rerun addlocale).

Seems KDM is a bit bugged ?

For me it's not a biggie it because it takes only few minutes have my tweaked KDE desktop and in the dutch language again.

Seems most users not changing the KDM theme (also me).

(did testing this issue today).

Thanks guys!

Okay, the bug is within KDE/KDM-Systemsettings.

also I can confirm that KDE team has changed the menu font settings for general menus and desktop menus(desktop one appear little bigger than the regular menu).

Removed the .gtkrc-2.0 file from home folder and installed Gtk-KDE4 and ALL the fonts appear as they should, great!

Font settings seem to be reset on my system when I use a theme for KDM.  Settings of Gnome applications are NOT affected.
