[testers need] Firmware for Interl 2200
« on: November 15, 2010, 03:01:23 AM »
I saw that few people has problems with firmware for that wifi card so here you have newest firmware: http://siamer.btk.net.pl/ipw2200-firmware-3.1-1pclos2010.noarch.rpm

If someone have that card please test it and let me know if it's working...

Thanks!

hi siamer,
as my NEC laptop has this intel wireless pro which required ipw2200 firmware.
when I run several PCLOS versions, most of them work out of the box , including the latest zen mini 2010.10

could you provide the test procedure ?
as I am new to Linux and play with pclos only for a short while, I can follow only when detailed procedure is provided, such as how to delete or uninstall the currect firmware, how to install and verify new firmware, what tests you need to perform?

thanks

Hi,

On the system where you want to test, you put a copy of the firwmare. To download it, and get sure the download don't look loose bits on the way, open a console, and in there copy/paste this:
Code: [Select]
wget http://siamer.btk.net.pl/ipw2200-firmware-3.1-1pclos2010.noarch.rpm
Now you have the package, you can either install it to the system where you downloaded it, or to another provided you transfer it by hand with a usb stick, or another convenient way.

To install it, become root in a terminal. When you open the terminal, manage to be in the same directory as where the package is located : either do from menus "open a terminal here", or do in the console the command "cd /home/wayne/Desktop" for instance, if the program is on the Desktop. Once you are in there and root (to become root, type su, press enter, type password, there you don't see what you type... press enter, you are root and the end of the prompt is now a '#' instead of a '$'). Now, you will install the firware with this command line:
Code: [Select]
rpm -Uvh ipw2200-firmware-3.1-1pclos2010.noarch.rpm
2 tricks: if you type just "rpm -Uvh ipw<hit tab key>" this will complete the command line.
if you type just "rpm -Uvh *.rpm" : it will install any rpm package that is in the same directory. (Several if there are several, provided they don't need additional dependencies)

thanks Melodie for your instruction and thanks siamer for the link to new ipw2200 firmware

I installed OpenBox Bonsai onto hard disk.
Then did the two command provided by Melodie. I could not believe it :D :D because it just works!!

Now this post is typed using installed Bonsai plus new ipw2200 firmware and using wireless internet

Then I did a repo speed test, pick the fast repo, Reload, did the task java, task multi media and install vlc..
again, all my media files can play now.

wow, I am happy.

Melodie, question: how to remove or uninstall  firmware using terminal command? I know how to do it in synaptic so just want to learn from terminal to uninstall

Hi,

I am happy for you as well.

To remove a package named foo, do as root : "apt-get remove foo". Just one thing : I would advise to always keep history of what you installed and for this it is best to use Synaptic. The packages installed and uninstalled from within the terminal have their logs in /var/log/messages, and this file also contains all and everything about what happens in the system. So it is not very practical to manage.

With the history in Synaptic, you can access to the files by date in the menu of Synaptic (File > History) and go back to the program you installed, see what dependencies were installed along with it... which otherwise is not as easy to figure out.

To learn more command lines, please grab the excellent Special Edition magazine parnote published with this topic in it:

Wow!  Thanks!

I take it this is out of testing, and in regular use, now?  I saw ipw220 firmware in last night's updates.  Just did a new install on a Dell D610 yesterday, and before I could follow up on the non-working wireless, it's fixed by updates!

Thanks, again, Siamer, and thanks, Tex, for getting it out there so fast!

Awesome!
