Help installing modem
« on: November 14, 2010, 11:00:40 AM »
Hi,

I need help installing a Trendnet TFM-560X voice fax modem.  It's serial and connected to ttyS0.  Setserial shows that ttyS0 in seen and configured.  PCC does not detect the modem or list the port for that matter.  Yes I did check auto detect modem.  The modem was available in PCLOS 2009, but I'm not sure it was autodetected.  I need this for sending and receiving faxes.  Eventually I would like to use this for voice mail, fax, and distinctive ring detection with the software VOCP.  But first things first.  I need to get the modem installed and recognized.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Clay

Let me see if I've got this right:

You've got an external modem?
Its connected to a serial port on the PC with the correct type of cable?
The hardware has worked with Linux in the past?
You've started the PCLinux Control Center (More Applications -> Configuration -> Configure Your Computer), gone to the "Networking and Internet" section and started the "Set up a New Interface" wizard?
You've gone through the various wizard steps (Analog Telephone Modem/Modem: Manual Choice/)
Said wizard does NOT show "TTYS0/COM1" in the list of connections? (this assumes that that is the location of the serial port your plugging into)

How am I doing so far?

If the wizard doesn't show the first 8 standard serial ports plus the catchall "/dev/modem" symbolic link, there might be something seriously hosed with your installation. If so, I would try running a LiveCD (checking it for corruption first -- that's a choice on the initial startup menu) and see if the modem can be set up from the live environment.

Thanks for the reply.  No I went to PCC and looked under Hardware.  I went in to networking and used the wizard and that seems to have worked, although I don't use the modem for a network connection so I left those fields blank.  My fax software now finds the modem however so this has done the trick.  Thank you for your help my friend.

Still I wonder why the modem doesn't show up in the hardware list? Or the serial post for that matter.

Thanks again,

Clay

External modems? I wouldn't think that they would be listed in the hardware because...well...they're external and don't rely on internal drivers.

Or at least they shouldn't.

As far as serial ports go, mine doesn't either. I don't remember it showing up since PCLOS 0.93 or so (w-a-a-y back when!). I guess that's because something as mundane as a simple serial port is handled by modern chipsets and is rolled into those drivers.

That's just a semi-educated guess on my part.

Glad to have helped!
