(Solved) Greyed out
« on: November 13, 2010, 06:46:00 PM »
When I go to "Configure Your Desktop>Network and connectivity>Sharing>Sharing>Samba, everything is grayed out and I don't see any way to gain access as root.

The area is greyed out because you need root's privileges to edit the area.

Either log in as root, then start systemsettings from there and make your changes or a preferred way, open the terminal, type "su -" then press enter then root's password then type "dbus-launch systemsettings" and go to the area and the area will be editable. Restart it again If systemsettings crash.

PCC can make the same changes, its best to consistently use one modifying area and i think pcc is a better candidate.

I guess. I'm trying to share a music folder and stream it to my internet radio.  The radio can't find the folder. I've got it shared.  Two internet radios. Neither can find the PC or folder.

Go to PCC> System> Manage System Services
and check if smb service is running (and set to start on boot)
if not then set and restart your PC.
>Steve

EDIT>  Are you trying to stream on LAN or to internet (public)?

DOH!! :-[ :-[

I'm such a DUMMY! Why the heck didn't I check that option???

thank you.:) NOW samba is running.  and I have it checked off to start on boot.

I'm sharing folers on mylocal home network. I want to stream mymusic coletion to my internet radio.

Now, the radio is able to find a PC.  It says, LOCALHOST, but cannot find any shared folders even though I have a shared folder.

Thanks.:)  I used the terminal method. I'm still stuck. The radio sees the PC as LOCALHOST, but does not see the shared folder.

You have to be more descriptive of your problem.

Your problem is divided into two parts, normal/regular file sharing using samba and internet streaming. Why not solving one problem at a time?

Do you have two computers on your network? can you see the remote share on computer from the other? can you transfer files back and forth?

If you have two computers on your network, make sure the normal file sharing is working correctly and then try to set up your internet radio streaming.

One problem at a time, each problem on its own thread and try to be descriptive in your titles, the title of this thread is very vague and those who are in a better position to help you out may skip your thread and that could lead to unnecessary long thread.

The primary question of this thread is already answered and hence this thread should be retired.

On the other thread i hope you will open, try to explain how the program that does the streaming work, where it is it installed, where and how  it gets the music to stream and how it sends the stream to the open web.

The problem could be network related and not with samba, or with samba.

georgetoon,
Open a session of konqueror and try in the address line>   smb://{yourlocalIP}/
eg:   for me this is>   smb://10.1.1.4/
this should display your shared folders.
>Steve

thanks. it's telling me, "No such file or directory."

I checked in Dolphin and it tells me that LOCALHOST does not exist.
I'll try firing up the laptop to test.

I shared a folder on the laptop and I know samba on the laptop works.

anyhow, the radio can't find the laptop.

The desktop, however, find the laptop.  It finds the laptop workgroup but cannot connect.

Plse tell me the IP addresses of both PCs
>Steve

EDIT>  and in PCC>  Security> Firewall> do you have File sharing (SMB) enabled in the firewalls?

Steve,

Thanks, but I'm going to close this thread. It's not a major issue right now.   It'll sort itself out. no sense in wasting folks' time. This happened before. I'm gonig to review my notes.  The answer will pop up.:)
