Samba Error "Invalid command: net rap share list" SOLVED as such
« on: November 11, 2010, 07:47:51 PM »
I've been yankin' my hair out over this error for days and are at my wits end.
This is only happening within my desktop PCLos2010
I have the full KDE updated on this laptop and on the Desktop and both are connected to the network and workgroup but trying to access the desktop is giving the error - "Invalid command: net rap share list" (even from within the machine itself).

I can see the machine within the Workgroup but get the error when ever I scan the machine?
The windows boxes say that I most likely don't have permissions to access??
I can access other machines (PCLos2010 Laptop, Desktops with PCLos2009, WinXP & Win7) without problems?
I have been backwards and forwards to and from the two 2010 machines trying to see why one is OK and the other not.
I have messed with settings that I do not have the faintest of in the hope that I will stumble over a fix.
I have deleted and reinstalled just about everything I can think of on the desktop (problem machine).
I have compared settings in PCC system services.
I see on the net that others have had this same error (not just in PCLos) but I have not been successful with any of their suggestions and have not found info on what or why the error occurs in the first place.
Like > What is "Invalid command: net rap share list"?
and > What causes it in the first instance?

I would be very grateful if someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks.

1. Make sure the computer name with the machine with the problem does not have a space in its name

2. Make sure the name of the shared folder does not have a space in its name

3. If you have set up "netbios" name, make sure it does not have a space in its name

can you copy and the paste the contents of "/etc/samba/smb.conf" txt file here? put the out output in "code" tags for easy readability

Thanks muungwana for your reply and sorry it's taken me a few days (got called out of town)  ::)

Well since then I have taken a 'side by side' look at my smb.conf files and ex the bad machine located discrepancy
way down amongst routing so copied the 'good' file across changed a couple of entries re machine names etc and
viola the "Invalid command: net rap share list" whatever that was has disappeared -  ;D

However - though not a big problem but still weird is an error I now get while trying to mount a couple of shared folders.

retrying with upper case share name
mount error(6) : No such device or address
Refer to the mount.cifs( 8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

I have deleted the share points - remade the shared points with same error?
I have 3 shared folders on that machine - 2 giving problems are folders within my home and the 3rd which is on a storage partition works fine?
I have tried creating other folders within my home and setting them to share with same error?
However - creating another shared folder within the storage partition works just fine?

If you can suggest a reason for this taking place I would be interested to have your input.
Again - thanks for response.

what name do you use for your home holder? May be it has some sort of an illegal character.

how r u trying to mount them? manually using the "mount" command on the terminal or? can you show us the exact command you used if its the former?

well - update  ;D

Spoke tooooooo soon  ::)
Now unable to mount any shared folders within either of my PCLos2010 machines
Get the same error at all points .....

retrying with upper case share name
mount error(6) : No such device or address
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

Have even removed those shares and tried creating a 'totally' new share point (different dir)
and still get the same error ???

I can access all other machines within the workgroup and their shares without any problems.
but can not access any of these 2010 shares (on either machine) from anywhere - not even from within the machine/s themselves.
I have tried making shares with various attributes ie: public, writable, browseable and still get the same error.

I have read through the  man mount.cifs  and can not establish what the problem is referring to.

Regarding structure > /home/hawkeye/Sharing/ and I am using the GUI samba (I'm a point & clicker)
On the other box one of the shares that was giving this problem was on another partition and I initially thought that might have been the problem by grasping at straws then started to get the same error from all shared points local or not.
This is not a problem from either of my 2009 boxes - they both work exactly as they should do.
I've even re-installed 2010 on this laptop and still get the problems.

Makes 2010 unusable.

Sorry didn't realize you were active - couldn't paste in a copy of my samba.conf (too many characters??)

My paths are directly off my home (in this case)
ie: /home/hawkeye/Sharing/
etc.

These are as per my other machines in general except on those I also have shared paths to various other partitions and even folders within partitions on secondary hard drives - they are all mountable (even from these 2010 boxes).
It is only the shared locations within these 2010 boxes that are the trouble and I have removed, re-created and created new with the same results - I have even logged in as root and tried it with the same results.

2010 is not "unstable", you are not doing it correctly somewhere.

open the terminal and type "smbtree" and then press enter, just press enter again when asked for a password and report the output here.

No sorry - that box is (as most) containing additional OS's and that one is my 2009.9 currently up
That box also contains the other problem 2010 OS but is currently not booted.

I am on the laptop at ACERPCLOS which has this OS (2010) and WinXP installed.

Also sorry about the extra pasted (duplicate) lines on the output (not sure how I did that).

The ACERPCLOS (this laptop)
the other problem 2010 box as stated last post is currently down - it sits in the same box as the PCLOS-QUAD which is running 2009.2 and of course is currently up.

I too notice the output referring to PCLOS-QUAD ?? but I can access that machine without problems (have just done so from here)

On this laptop I currently only have the one shared folder \\ACERPCLOS\downloads
I removed the others and generated this one to see if I could overcome the problem.

ok, now, go to this "download" folder, press "F4" to bring up the terminal(this is one of many ways of opening a terminal here) and then type this command and paste its output here

ls -dl `pwd`

ps:
copy and paste the command to make sure you get it correctly
