PCLinuxOS Openbox 2010 11 is available
« on: November 11, 2010, 08:13:19 AM »
Hi,

Texstar has not announced it, but it's available now, at this page:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/?page_id=542

It has a new  GTK theme and a new window theme

It is not really an update compared to the preceeding version, because of a bug related to plymouth theme switching back to default theme after install, that I could not resolve, I reconstructed it starting from the Openbox Mini that was at stage RC 6.5 and continued improving it along with the small version.

What is new:
You will find Compcache working in it, the latest kernel as announced at pclinuxos.com page, some desktop effects with the xcompmgr-dana version.

* Compcache is a program that has a kernel module, and that provides more memory resource by adding a bloc device in ram acting as a swap device. The kernel module needs rzscontrol be installed in order to be able to control it's start and the way it functions. rzscontrol can be found in the sources of the compcache program at it's web site:
http://code.google.com/p/compcache

If you want to see where it is in the system, take a look into /usr/local/sbin directory, and look with an editor at /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
You can see it in action by invoking "cat /proc/swaps".

/!\ when kernel 2.6.36 will be in our repos, the configuration will have to be changed. (We may have some time before we get it).

* xcompmgr-dana is xcompmgr improved by dana, the main developer of Openbox. She had patched it to add some transparency. The effect is nicer with it. In this Openbox version, you get a new menu in the right-click that allows activating or deactivating several level effects on the fly, courtesy to CalimeroTeknic's shell script (you can see it in the .config/openbox/scripts directory).

This version includes lots of applications in more or less all categories. The ones listed at main site, and more. (PCManFM and Thunar, Stellarium, all for desktop use, Firefox and Midori, Moneymanagerex, and so on... )

There might be a few little things that are left to be fixed, but normally all should work at best.

I hope you will enjoy it.

Regards,
Mélodie
