How could be this tested? By me to say?

By the way where's JohnBoy? ???
 :P

Hi .......  me here ......  just getting younger by the day   ;D

What is needed is to do a remaster of an install, after replacing the existing /usr/share/mylivecd/linuxrc   file with the one I provided the link for.

It is so much quicker and easier if you have a spare partition to install one of the mini versions of PCLOS, then change the file, and then remaster.

After that, use the PCLinuxOS-liveUSB creator package to do a live install of the new remaster, to a removable device like a flash drive partition, or an external USB connected HDD partition. The target partition needs to be formatted ext2 or ext3 for the live creator.

You would then need to edit the menu.lst file on the new live install to add the copy2ram boot code to the two existing stanzas ........  I just add it after the fromusb  boot code on that line in both stanzas.
I also change  splash=silent  to splash=verbose   so that I can watch the screen and see that copy2ram is actually working ......  there will be a delay while it is copying the loop image into ram.

It will throw an error if it fails ......  just saying it cannot copy to ram, and continuing on as a normal boot.

It does take some time, which is why I suggested using a mini install.

Hope that clarifies ......  but get back if not  ;)

regards.

I'd like to try it and will try.
Look at my signature please - I'll have to think some more on it. ;)

If you can do it without too much trouble that would be great. I appreciate your interest in this. ;)

If you need any clarification just post back.

You could always just rename the existing linuxrc file to "linuxrc.original" and then drop in the new one before remastering.
That would make it a simple exercise to return your install to what it was.

You could just burn the resulting ISO to a CD or DVD and check the cop2ram function there as that also needs to be checked .......   so even those without an available USB device can help do some testing on this.

My tests of this were successful. :D Using a liveUSB, copy2ram with the iso made with the changes works as expected. Persistence works! :D
I burned the iso to CD to test if the changes to linuxrc made any difference. LiveCD works fine. The only thing I noticed was that when the Copy to Ram boot option is chosen, the plymouth graphics do not display. Not a problem here. ;D

edit: This test was with LXDE-Mini-2010.10. I tested copy to ram on a CD with the unaltered files and had the same results; i.e. the graphical bootsplash doesn't show.

I tested the Minime ISO here on the USB drive and using copy2ram and persistence it did show the boot splash.

So all is OK in that regards it seems.

So far I have not seen any negatives and have continued to test.

It is looking very positive at present.

regards.

I  am sorry for the delay, Just19.

I need some more basic instructions because the explanation is for more advanced users. (here it could be asked: "so what are you doing here, noob?"; the answer could be: "if a noob tried it and it works then it works" ;))

I need the instructions for to know what to read in the forum about the procedure.
I'd like to try your modifications by trying firstly the unmodified way and after that your way.

- I have to do mylivecd on USB, is it right? And after that I have to change the /usr/share/linuxrc file on the USB?
- What if I try it on a CD?
- I can't imagine how I would be able to boot to different PCLOS versions this way. Are different versions included in the "make my LiveCD" procedure?

Neal, dare I ask>  splash=silent  ??
>Steve  ;)

Yes, splash=silent was used. I had already checked the boot up (looking for errors) using splash=verbose.

It seems that things have overtaken this testing.

The edits have been applied to the latest update of the mylivecd package and so will be available for everyone doing a remaster.
It also means that the new functionality will be available to anyone using an ISO created after this update.
There is a new version of Minime out which includes the changes.  My error ......  on checking it appears it does not include the update.

All is good it seems.   ;D

I just ran a test on the lates full KDE ISO and - yes -  it is capable of using copy2ram when installed using the liveusb creator.   ;D ;D
May it be the first of many!

An example of my menu.lst file boot entries for this ISO .....  having selected to name the install as KDE_Nov .......  of course your UUID will be different but this should give an indication of what needs to be done ......

Code: [Select]
