File association
« on: November 07, 2010, 09:23:31 AM »
/home/brian/tmp/EE54980C4321BDE7CFD2B346F8B29ABD3F77B878.torrent could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

I received this today after downloading a torent.  It usually just opened it, but now it doesnt default to the program I use.  How do I set it to where it opens it automatically?

i don't have a torrent file right now but it should be as any other file

right click on the file/properties

in the first tab there is a small tool button in front of the type, press it

that will call the menu to change what app opens the file you need to edit

there should be a list with possible apps to use, put as first the one you want, if it is already at first verify that the apps is not crashed and not responding at the moment

also you can open the app you want and from there open the file

the address where the file is located, inside tmp, some apps won't work well with it, copy to your home folder or desktop could be a good idea

open directly the file inside the app you need to use failed too?

this is the only way i know to edit the file association

if this has happened to you before, i would consider creating a new user to see if the new user has the same problem or not

if not, the user you have must have some error and would be good to consider abandon it and keep using the new one and just copy your personal files from one folder to another

No it works fine if i open the file directly.  When I would download a torrent it would show up in my download window and after downloading it would automatically open to the defaulted program that I used to torrent itself, like transmission.  It no longer does that.  Plus instead of it going to my download folder it goes to my tmp folder.  Those are the only files that do that.  The torrent files are deafulted to transmission but wont open via download window in firefox.

have you edited options inside firefox/preference/applications

there write torrent, in mine it has the default action, ask what to do but in that same list it also offers ares in wine and other apps, check this please

In Firefox, if you click 'open file', it goes to the temp folder, and if you click 'save file', it goes to the Downloads folder. Try clicking save file when downloading and then opening the file from your Downloads folder.
