[SOLVED]Desktop Effects Problem?
« on: November 06, 2010, 09:03:46 AM »
Although I fixed the issue in my previous thread, it seems I still have a problem that may be caused by the desktop effects. My taskbar occasionally "disappears" temporarily, though I haven't figured out what triggers it. I've noticed that hovering over it, or closing/minimizing program windows makes the icons reapear. As for the desktop effects, I currently have only 3 enabled. If anyone can help me troubleshoot this, I'd appreciate it!

Have you checked the "auto-hide"  function to see if its been accidentally enabled?

Left click on your Cashew icon in the panel > More Settings > and make sure the "Always Visible" option is selected

Could also check the "windows can cover" or "windows go below" functions in the same place.

Those settings look fine. I've disabled 2 more desktop effects, so I'll see what happens. However, I still noticed a slight distortion of my taskbar when I opened Frostwire, which cleared up when I brought Firefox into focus. As I said, simple mouse actions - ie: switching between program windows or hovering over the taskbar - seem to bring it back to normal. I'll report back here if I still see any more instances. Stay tuned....

Actually, that's quite a good idea.  In fact you may want to go the whole hog and remove them all except one or two and if that works add them back one at a time until you find the "culprit"

I only have 1 enabled right now, as it is. I just might disable that, too.... I'm beginning to think the desktop effects may be too much for my video card to handle. I believe it is an older model....

*sigh* Well, I disabled the last desktop effect & I STILL seem to have an issue. I'll continue to look into this, though any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

What hardware do you have please (video card, etc)?
There is no shame in saying "I don't know".

I believe my video card is an Nvidia, but I don't know the specific model. I've now disabled the desktop effects completely, so I'll see how it goes. So far so good.... I now have a rather attractive charcoal-grey taskbar, in which I see the icons very nicely. If there's no further issues, I'll just leave it this way. No use in trying to make the video card do something it can't....

You don't know? Have you set up the graphics server in the Control Center? And have you checked what hardware you have in the Control Center (Hardware>Browse and configure hardware.)?

Well, I think it's safe to say this issue is resolved :) I haven't noticed any problems since disabling the desktop effects, & I can live without them, so I'll leave it this way. Thanx to everyone who tried to help!
