strange login after uninstall
« on: November 06, 2010, 08:16:12 AM »
Hi all

I have been trying to get a little program called runbasic  http://www.runbasic.com/ up and running
for some reason it will not start. I read on the RB user forum that one user solved his problem by uninstalling MYSQL
so via Synaptic I uninstalled and re-booted

[START LOOP HERE]
Now I have a strange LOGIN screen its a white rectangle in the middle of an all black screen
with "Welcome to 1 .office (office being the name of my computer)

I enter my usual login name and password and the next screen is all black with a "popup"
stating :
you are attempting to run "drak3d" which requires administrative privileges but more information is needed in order to do so.

Authenticating as "laurie"

I enter my password and the screen remains all black with another popup for 3D Desktop Effects
and 2 options for either No 3D desktop effects or Compiz Fusion click Cancel or Ok

both Cancel and Ok take me to yet another popup  stating I should reboot if you have changed the video driver for all other settings
log out then back in again.Cancel or Ok

either button takes me back to
GOTO [START LOOP HERE]

a "safe mode" login  takes me to a shell

any ideas how to recover appreciated

Laurie

Interesting I can see all my samba shares on office from my XP machine so not sure what the login is for ???

MySQL is needed by Akonadi, which is needed by KDE. How you managed to remove it without removing KDE is a mystery - or maybe you have removed KDE...

From the safe log in run telinit 3 to get into a normal terminal with networking available. Then log in as root and run apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade && apt-get install task-kde4 && reboot

It will probably take a while (hours), but when it finally reboots things should be back to normal, although you might or might not still have any customisations you made to KDE. If you get any errors report them here.

This is why we don't recommend installing applications from outside the repo. If you need an outside app, request it.

Thanks kjpetrie

is there any way of changing the mirror I'm using (internode) from the shell
I have done this

Quote
From the safe log in run telinit 3 to get into a normal terminal with networking available. Then log in as root and run

run apt-get update and I'm getting
a whole heap of "Failed to Fetch errors"
and  "Release files for some repositories could not be retrieved or authenticated"
 thanks in advance

I have tried to ping my wireless router and get the message "Network is unreachable"
how can I fix this please

or alternatively how do I determine  the "RPM's" I need and I will download them to my win-XP machine
and transfer them tp PCLINUXOS Via live cd and external drive

At this stage it would probably be quicker to just reinstall from the liveCD.
