IBM Thinkpad A21M (solved)
« on: November 05, 2010, 07:28:31 PM »
I tried installing pclos 2010.07 kde4 on a IBM Thinkpad A21M with 512 mb. of ram and the login screen comes up at boot and I can bring up the desktop but when I log out the screen goes completely blank and I'm unable to get to the log on screen . I have to do a hard reboot to get to the log in screen ,tried different key combinations but none worked and I'm unable to get to a tty . I really don't know where to start ,if someone could help I'd be grateful.

rob0917,

Just a suggestion ...

That A21M is quite an older laptop with a Pentium 3 processor. As such, even with 512 MB RAM, KDE 4 is going to run quite slowly on that computer. Perhaps you would get better performance using one of the lighter desktops under PCLinuxOS. I can heartily recommend PCLinuxOS Phoenix, PCLinuxOS-LXDE, and PCLinuxOS-e17. Any of those versions of PCLinuxOS are going to run MUCH faster on that older computer. KDE 4 is better suited for more modern machines.

FWIW, I also have an A21M with 512 MB RAM, so I can attest to the speed increase, first hand.

Thanks for the suggestion .I'll try one of the lighter desktops . Just don't know what to do about the blank login screen.
