No "h" Key on keypress without special . . . SOLVED
« on: November 01, 2010, 08:25:39 PM »
Hi Gang, back again with another dumb problem: my "h" (lowercase h) will not appear on a mere lowercase key-press. I have to press Shift+CapsLock+H together to achieve it. I dunno what I did, but I'd really love to get my "h" back . . .

So far, I've run xev, which I admit didn't tell me much.  Someone told me there's no "Key Press Event." We seem to have narrowed the problem down to the X windows manager, but here, I'm stuck. I've no idea where to look, or what to look for or what I'm supposed to do if I find it.

"h" works if I go to another console and start up another X session. It's just in the main (default?) session where I seem to have somehow turned it off. How do I turn it back on?

Are you saying that in all of the above instances you had to press "Shift+CapsLock+H" ?

Rudge,

Yes, that's what I have to press to get h.

Thanks for getting back to me.

"Shift" and "Caps Lock" are sorta the same thing. One is temporary and one sets it for permanent. Pressing both to achieve a certain result for ONE letter is quite baffling.

Have you/can you try a different keyboard?

Yes to another keyboard. No difference.

And both CAPS+Shft-Lock are required to do this, otherwise it does not work.

If you have attached a different keyboard and the same thing happens, it is not a hardware problem. Maybe you have specified the wrong keyboard on install. I am lost.
Someone smarter than me will come along. Good luck. Sorry.  ??? ???

Okay, coming at it from another angle, is there some way to re-install win manager? what is it called so I can call it up in Synaptic and blow this "faulty" one away. Obviously, something's been messed up, so rather than hunting around for something I don't even know what I'm looking for, let's just eliminate the problem. I don't want to have to reinstall PCLINOS for something like this, but if I can't fix it, that's my only option.

Have you tried setting back the shortcuts in system settings?

Does the problem occur in ALL apps (e.g. browser, OpenOffice, Editor, Console)?

If in KDE 4.5.x, have you tweaked any window properties?
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Thinkpad X61 Tablet, Core2Duo 1.66 MHz, 4 GB Ram, Intel onboard Graphics, Plextor PX-256M3 256 GB SSD; Thinkpad R61i, Core2Duo 1.66 MHz, 2 GB Ram, Intel onboard graphics, 120 GB HDD

Yes, occurs in all apps .......... I didnt load OpenOffice yet, but I'm assuming it would probably show up there too.
Not sure I've tweaked any win properties, but I mite've unintentionally. Wat am I looking for? Sorry for the poor spelling but I'm getting tired of this h thing.

Does it happen in the virtual consoles (accessed by pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 thru F4 (four consoles available))?

Have you tried creating a new user, and login as that user (to determine if it is a configuration issue at the user level, vs. the system level)?

Ok I finally got around to fixing my g problem. What I did -> configure your desktop -> shortcuts -> global keyboard -> top right click on file -> import scheme -> kde default for 3 modifier keys -> click on apply at the bottom.

THIS did it!!

I did the same thing, thank-you very much,  genomega: this fixed the problem. I'm so relieved. As to trying this in other consoles, "h" worked in other consoles but I hadn't gone as far as to try a new user; that was my next step if "this" hadn't worked. But it did, and I thank everyone ........... again ... who contributed suggestions, even if they didn't work.

Yahoo!! Now I can go on and enjoy my (new) install.

Thanks again, everyone.
