driver removal script

In the past there was a script to remove all unnecessary video drivers on installation?
Why is it gone (I ask it because it was asked on the Dutch forum  )?

Would love to have a script that removed all unnecessary drivers after install and setup is complete and you have verified your system is running correctly.

I know (... I think I know) that unnecessary drivers aren't active, but on an upgrade, they also have to be rebuilt, etc. etc.

Only thing when it's handy: when you change your video card / wireless device / ....
(however vesa-modus, DSL-line, etc. can help you at that moment to install the right drivers....)

I hope someone knows (in the 2007 - 2009 version, it was still available....)

It's also handy for any USB/external hard-drive installs. etc. where the installation may be moved from PC to PC (especially if there isn't an Internet connection at the moment).

if i'm right, the only time one might be inconvenienced is on first boot after installing a new kernel.  after that, the unneeded drivers are inert.  they don't take up much space and modern drives are so capacious that one needn't be bothered by their presence.

Still lots of users have to download the package updates for inclucded nvidia and ati drivers while they sometimes don't even need them.

As i stated for the reasons above, I prefer the drivers remain.

If the tool can be fixed (re:

i was talking with the Guvna himself recently about this ... currently the package in question is not functioning ... i know that he did mention he was working on it

), then I would prefer to see it provided as an end-user tool (not automated after first boot).

Yes, like before, that you can choose if they will get removed or not (just before the installation of the OS to your disk)

On the machines I have, the extra unnecessary drivers typically add a few seconds to boot time even if there hasn't been a kernel upgrade.
You can check yourself by pressing ESC when at Plymouth.
