[SOLVED] Sound muted when I log in
« on: November 02, 2010, 10:06:01 AM »
A few days ago, I noticed that whenever I log in, my sound is muted.  Any idea on what I'm supposed to do to correct it?

Gonna have to provide a tad more info for good answers.

Which version of PCLinuxOS are you using? KDE - Gnome etc?

Is all your sound dead or just "system" sounds.

If its music, which apps have you tried?

Have you checked the panel icon to make sure the volumes not muted and/or turned down?

This is on the Xfce version, and Xfce doesn't do system sounds.  Basically, when I log in, there's this red "x" over the speaker icon, and I have to click on it, go into the mixer, and un-mute my master and PCM levels in order to have sound -- and I did NOT leave them like that when I logged out.

aaahh!  xfce is not my cup of tea so I know very little about it - 'fraid your gonna have to await one of the others to point you in the right direction.

Have you tried reinstalling any sound related packages like xfce4-mixer ?

Is your system fully upto date ?

Menotu, reinstalling xfce4-mixer did the trick.  Thanx!  ;D

Oh, and there was nothing to update either, according to Synaptic.

Thanx again!

Correction -- it worked that one time, but I just got home from work only to find it muted AGAIN when I log in.

With Xfce, you can choose to launch an existing session or to create a new one. Perhaps starting a new session will resolve the problem.

Parnote, I'm sure this is a dumb question, but how do I do that when I'm already logged in? (I'm assuming that's what you're referring to, right?) I've never needed multiple sessions running at once before, therefore I don't know how to do this.

And Sproggy, thanks for bringing that up -- I had forgotten all about that program.  I remember having to use it a time or two about 5 years ago when I was new to Linux and running Mandrake.  I'll definitely give that a shot when I get home from work tonight and see if that fixes it.

have you guys tried running alsaconf to setup your sound again???

No, I did go to the Control Center and checked use Pulse Audio and logged out then back in and nothing happened. I restarted and now it seems to be working so far though the system is not using pulse audio somehow it unchecked itself.

Well, I just tried alsaconf and rebooting -- still muted at startup.  I then tried enabling Pulse Audio and rebooting -- no go there either, plus it unchecked itself.  I'm tempted to switch from ALSA to OSS -- would that be a good idea or no?

Sproggy, I just tried both of those things and rebooting -- no luck with either of those. :-(

Well, I don't know what I've done here, but the last three times in a row I've booted up, my volume has been right where I left it.  Sproggy, I'm going to assume here that something you suggested worked, but the problem is, I have no idea just what it was! LOL  Yesterday, when I noticed the first time that it was fine, I thought I'd hold off until I'd booted up three times in a row with the volume right where I'd left it just to make sure, and sure enough, it has booted up the last three times in a row just fine, so I'm gonna mark this thread as solved, although I can't seem to put my finger on just what the cure was. LOL  Thanx again to all who helped with this! :-)
