[work around] ktorrent download stalls and no seeds found
« on: October 31, 2010, 05:43:57 AM »
Attempting to use ktorrent for the first time and the download stalls, finding zero seeds, even though the web page shows 11 seeds available.

Any ideas how to debug?

a few things that have worked for me in the past (( on a regular base ))

--change tracker
--reboot computer without closing ktorrent first..just reboot.
--change upload slots

Other than that, I have done other things, but never concluded that it was worthwile.
Just reboot usually gave a fresh list of seeders/leeches.

But sometimes, nothing changed even after trying for several days
example
"" The 4400 "" , season 1 and 2 came down blazing fast
season 3 and 4 took 2 weeks

Good luck

I dunno, but 11 seeds sounds like "not too many" to me. Of course it depends on lots of other things, too, like how fast any given seeder is uploading, but they could just as easily be throttled on all 11.

How long have you observed it, though? I've seen very slow start-ups, even with "stalled" displayed, and come back an hour later to see it ripping along at full speed.

In addition to the good advice you've already had you could check if your firewall is letting the torrent through.

And some ISP's block torrents (or make it difficult)

Thanks all.  I ended up installing Azureus and this ended up working for me.  It quickly found multiple seeds and downloaded with little drama.  Given this success, I'm unlikely to spend much time figuring out ktorrent.

Thanks again,

Strange, I just use Ktorrent, no problems here. I left Azureus long time ago since had a tendency to "own" the bandwidth, when compared  Ktorrent gave me the same speed but respected my surfing.

Just my .02 cents.

I've never really had any success with any torrent downloads (Windows or Linux).  Direct downloads seem to always be dramatically faster - like 20 minutes versus 6 hours...

And to be truthful, I suspect it may be some combination my settings and/or ISP throttling.

I agree with you - sometimes it's the number of seeders (and the seeders own upload settings) and/or the ISP choking the torrent.

I always go with a direct downloads - FTP if possible, and torrents as a last resort.

With many (most?) ISPs, the allowed upload rate is far less than the download rate, even if they don't restrict torrents.  So even with 8 or 10 seeders, it may still be, just due to the math, slower than a direct download.

Guys, all depends on a zillion things

This week I downloaded a few versions of Stargate Universe from Kickasstorrents portal. They usually got plenty seeders and leeches on their torrents
Each 350 Mb movie was downloaded in less than 20 minutes.
My download was average 600Kb/s ( plus some ) ,which is what I pay for ( $18 month, 24/7 unlimited ). It doesn't go faster on my subscription
Last week I downloaded several science fiction movies with Ktorrent
They were 700 Mb movies and came down in about 45 minutes

However...................My download, which may be 600Kb/s in the morning, starts dropping badly in the afternoon, and no matter what I tried, 50Kb/s was the best I could get in the late afternoon and evening till about 10.00Hrs.
Then it starts picking up a little to about 100Kb/s
In the mornings, full speed again

OK then...
