hmm, maybe I'll install the two packages you have marked, reboot, and reinstall the guest additions...

well, apparently that was the problem. I installed the two packages and rebooted. Then I could resize the window. It also fixed the shared clipboard. which makes me think it's just running the OSE guest additions. which is fine as long as it works  :)
