(Solved) getvirtualbox?
« on: October 28, 2010, 08:21:52 AM »
okay, hopefully this is the last time I will have to ask about VirtualBox. Is getvirtualbox to set up PCLOS as a guest? or does it install VirtualBox so you can run guests inside PCLOS? And if it is to set up PCLOS as a guest, do I have to remove a previous version of the PUEL guest additions?

sorry if I seem dense lately, I haven't been sleeping well lol

getvirtualbox will install virtualbox on your PCLinuxOS system so that you can run Guests on it

that's what I thought. someone on here suggested I run it to set up my PCLOS guest ::smh::

One of these days I will get an answer on the proper way to install the PUEL guest additions INTO PCLOS to run as a guest.

thanks Andy

Are you looking to install the guest additions into PCLinuxOS running as a guest on another host OS, or into an OS running as a guest on a PCLinuxOS host?

Andy,

Lets try and do a couple of things and hopefully sort out the confusion that VBox is giving you. (you're not alone in that - it can be confusing in the beginning wondering which is host - which is guest - when/how to run Guest addditions etc :D)

First, what OS are you running?  - another Linux OS or Windows?
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

smiles, I'm not THAT confused...lol

I'm running approx 20 guests in VirtualBox on a Mac host running SL 10.6.4. The reason I've been asking what's up is, I've tried to install various flavors of PCLinuxOS over the last year or so but I can't seem to make everything work as it should. For example, I downloaded the openbox 2010.10rc3 yesterday and although it runs and most things work as they should, the shared clipboard doesn't, nor can I drag the guest window to resize the screen as I can do in other guests. I figured maybe is something unusual about PCLinuxOS as a guest. I know it comes pre-installed with some part of the guest additions normally, but VB recommends using the PUEL version of guest additions if you are running the PUEL version of VB, which I am. So I thought perhaps I need to take something out or add something I'm missing to get it all to work.

thanks for responding btw.

p.s. if you click on my lil web link, you can see I do have a few guests including PCLinuxOS

I'm not. Not with PCLinuxOS. I think I am missing something.

You're missing the installation of the PUEL guest additions. Install them, the same way as with any other Linux guest.

ok thanks. I have done that before. but as I have mentioned in other posts. Not everything works quite right when I do that. for example, when I resize the PCLOS window, PCLOS doesn't resize with it unlike other guests. The shared clipboard doesn't work with PCLOS for some reason. And with flavors with Compiz, they will crash if I try   to turn Compiz on etc.

Did you set Machine --> Guest Display Auto-resize Host+G? If you don't set the right options, then of course the options won't work. Note in the screen shot the option is currently active, and the toggle set to Disable... if clicked again.

It seems to work well here. Note the screen shot was done while upgrading the Guest Additions from version 3.2.8 to 3.2.10. This was done with the VBox window maximized.

One more with the installation of the Guest Additions finished.

And finally at full screen mode.

Yes, I'm aware. I have a question though. Are you installing the OSE guest additions that are in synaptic or from the .iso with the PUEL guest additions?

On a fresh install, I always get the warning that there are guest additions already installed using a different method and I should remove them properly before installing... I forget the message in its entirety but you get the idea.

lol sorry, that was a dumb question. I can see you are installing from the .iso

I just created a new VM from the latest ISO, and installed the guest additions in much the same way as O-P has outlined, everything seems to function exactly as you would expect.

Yes, when you install the new guest additions the software will warn you that you are about to remove the currently installed version and ask for confirmation; the guest additions you install are the ones in the ISO not the ones in synaptic

I'm starting to wonder if this isn't just an issue with the Mac version of VirtualBox.

after installing the guest additions, if I do a search in synaptic for "virtualbox", there are just two files still installed...'x11-driver-input-vboxmouse' and 'x11-driver-video-vboxvideo'. Which is as it should be, I think.

btw, if I go to "configure the computer" then "hardware" then "configure video card", I get this message..."Your Xorg configuration file is broken, we will ignore it"
