3D games with Intel I3 integrated graphics
« on: October 27, 2010, 06:24:15 PM »
I haven't been able to get 3D graphics to run.

The PCLinuxOS Control Center > Configure 3D Desktop effects screen says,
"Your system does not support 3D desktop effects."

Attempts to run graphics games such as Supertuxcart and TORCS results in nothing happening.  There is no response when I clicked on the menu item (other than the menu closes).  When I click Neverball, the task appears for a couple seconds on the taskbar and then disappears.

I've read the "Core i3 CPU - does not support 3D?" and "cannot enable desktop effects" and "can I use 3D effects at all" threads and can't see an answer.

The resolution to my problem may be in there somewhere, but I can't see it.

Does anyone with an Intel I3 or I5 or I7 CPU that uses the integrated Intel GPU, and no separate video card, have 3D games running?

Did 3D work with a standard install, with no tweaking?  If so, could we compare our configurations and settings?

If tweaking was necessary to get 3D games working, I'd really appreciate any specific info or instructions that will get 3D games up and running!

Thanks

Thanks for the polished distro and informative forum.  Even without 3D, it is my favorite.

Smitty,

I just purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge with i3 processor and Intel graphics.  3D does not work.  I think this reply really states what the fix is:

Quote
I think we just need to hang tight till 2.6.34 is released by the PCLOS team once it is complete and tested. I'm ok without effects since I know it will be an easy fix once the kernel updates arrive.

I'm going to await the kernel upgrade.

as you see it is required many things to make this integrated(inside the cpu socket) video card to work

driver update, kernel update and xorg update are required if i understand well

the problem is that the kernel that we want/need to have is not stable yet(some releases take longer to reach the quality we want than others) and xorg updates sometimes brings more problems than benefits but is something we will have, eventually

patience while the fix reaches repos  :)

Thanks, T6.:) I'll be patient.:)  While the 3D is nice to have, it's not a big requirement at the moment.

My notebook runs fine and PCLinuxOS with KDE4.5 is really fast!:)  And it looks gorgeous!

3D is the little bit of eye candy that gives a nice finishing touch.:)

I know this is maybe "harsh" but I make it a point to avoid Windows AND Intel. There are (often better working) alternatives.

I love the good ole stickers "Intel Inside", saves me trouble for it saves me time asking  ;D

You should take a look at the GPU indexes for those build in Intell (or AMD) GPU's, its mostly very disturbing low.
If 3D is wanted, check the GPU possiblillities for your new net/notebook or PC before buying.

i was going to do a similar comment but intel is really popular in notebook and netbook market

get a good price for a amd with nvidia or good amd video card that supports linux is complicated, things are improving over time but not fast enough

i have the fortune to have a netbook with a intel video card that is supported on linux

the rule of get the best hardware sometimes can't be applied for money or availability limitations

The previous systems I purchased had AMD processors and Nvidia graphics.  This is the first intel system I've purchased since switching to Linux nearly ten years ago.  The i3 core processors are new.  I'm hoping Linux will support it for 3D.  I had the option of buying the i5 with ATI graphics.  However, the price jumped considerably.

This notebok is not my workhorse.  I have a nice desktop for that.   It would be nice to have full 3D.  If it arrives, then Hurrah!  Of not, oh, well. Next time around I'll do a bit more research. ('m still hopeful it'll get supported.)

I do a lot of Linux advocacy on my blog and when I meet folks.  I pull out my laptop/notebook and fire up PCLinuxOS.  "Sit down.  Let me show you a REAL operating system."  And 3D is a huge game changer when showing folks Linux.  When you show them the 3D environment, they really sit up and take notice.  So, the only downside is, I'm unable to show them 3D and I cannot blog about it in regards to this notebook.

"I'm hoping Linux will support it for 3D"

linux supports it but the driver required released by intel is too complicated right now, can't be added as a normal driver and has many requirements as mentioned before

"I had the option of buying the i5 with ATI graphics.  However, the price jumped considerably"

yes, the i3 right now is the lowest line (not considering celeron as a option) so everything over this one is way too much expensive and to be honest i don't see a justification to pay extra for intel hardware

i am curious to know how the amd video card in the new amd cpus works, maybe has similar problems compared to this intel counterpart?

Yes, this is what I meant. Linux supports, but driver can't be added normally at the moment.

This processor is FAST.  I'm very happy with it.  Video plays well, apps launch quickly.  It really does a fine job. PCLinuxOS KDE 4.5 flies!

And, as I mentioned before, even without 3D, PCLinuxOS looks stunning!  The display is wonderful, keyboard is terrifically responsive, and the overall build is really solid.

opengl depends on 3d, it is loaded when a video driver with 3d capabilities is available

if no 3d no opengl

I'm thinking maybe so.  I have the system set up as dual boot. so, I copied the video file over to the Windows partition.  I booted Windows7 Pro and launched Windows Media Player. Opened the video full screen and with a file manager window open in the background...no stutter or frame freeze at all.

With the exception of this one video, all video/DVDs so far have played without a hitch in PCLinuxOS.)
