Do I need Samba? (Solved!)
« on: October 27, 2010, 01:20:39 PM »
Running LXDE 2010 on very ancient lappy, only 10 gig drive. I've blown off nvidia drivers and some printer drivers along with other things I don't use. I'm not using file or printer sharing, can I get rid of Samba?

Tks all

You sure can. There are a couple of library files out of the samba pacakges you will need to leave as there are some packages dependent on them. ie libsmbclient0

Seriously, if you don't need to connect to other computers on a LAN, you can blow it away.   :)

I do use the wi-fi at the library, but other networks like home don't have or at least right now I don't. This is the only 'puter I have and just trying to reclaim some disk space, I'm down to like 1.5 gig on SDA1..

You don't need samba to connect to wifi.   samba is for setting up a network at home/work/etc.  So you don't need it there.  When there, go to PCC (control center) >Network Center> and find the wifi signal and do whatever (encryption key if needed) to connect.   But I suspect you already know that.
