(Solved) LXDE won't shutdown in VirtualBox
« on: October 26, 2010, 08:01:37 AM »
I just recently, (yesterday) installed PCLOS LXDE as a guest. It works fine except it won't actually shutdown. It goes to the shutdown screen, fades, then nothing, just hangs.

any thoughts?

Please press Escape during shutdown,
and say where it hangs
(what does the last line(s) say?)

Thanks

okay, first, it wouldn't recognize any keys. so I tried going to the log in screen first and shutdown there. first thing I noticed was a warning about a network loop. then it tried to end the Awahi? (I forget the spelling already) daemon, but failed and said is no such file or directory.

Have you got Guest Additions installed?

It was probably avahi-daemon which - I believe - supports/monitors network services.

PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

I also have that loops on shutdown - on all computers at home with all kind of PCLinuxOS-distributions; but they do a shutdown properly...

It's also possible that the avahi-daemon crashes - but I'm astonished that that hold the shutdown
=> is it really the last line on shutdown?? (probably it is, but I would like to verify it  :-[ )

OK, thanks for the screenshot (how do you do that during shutdown??? - it seems it isn't done by a photo camera)
(and me happy I'm not the only one with loop-things => if I know how you take a screenshot of it, I think I'm going to open a separate thread for that)

The problem is thus that /home don't get unmounted.....
=> don't know a solution at the moment, but I experienced it once [so thinking now about it]

I'm running PCLOS as a guest in virtualbox on a Mac... so I can use the Mac's screen shot capabilities.

as far as home not unmounting, could that be because I made a virtualbox shared folder in my home directory and it's not unmounting?

Oh yes, forgetten that  ;D

I would suggest to mount that shared folder on e.g. /mnt/shared
=> then it don't cause any problems I'd think

that's where I used to mount shared folders, but when I do that, since it is at 'root' level. any other guest can't read and write to the file since it gets written with 'root' permissions. but I can move it there to see if that helps the shutdown issue.

ok, moving it to /mnt/* fixed the restart and shutdown problem. now if I can figure out how to get the folder in pcmanfm's sidebar all will be great. it's odd that turned out to be the issue. I have almost two dozen guests of various Linux flavors and PCLOS is the only one that has an issue. oh well.

I would do something tricky then, by making the filesystem FAT32 (which serves as network directory on the guests)  ;D
But maybe, if it's accessible in PCLinuxOS Control Center, you can change (using Expert options) it to user rights too....

Hi,

I might mistake but after more than 42 pages experience with Openbox Mini testing I think the bpalogin and other loop at shutdown are not involved in the shutdown hanging problem. (I met with this message many times with different Openbox versions and it never prevented the distro from working correctly)

I might want to give it a try at the new Lxde in Virtualbox in PCLinuxOS, as well, to see if I meet with the same problem.

First, can you assure you have checked the md5sum of the iso after download ?

it turned out to just be a question of where the shared folder was mounted after all.
