Can't open documents but can copy across network
« on: October 25, 2010, 10:29:23 PM »
OK I have kind of a wierd situation.  While using a WinXP machine on my home network, I can copy documents from the PCLOS 2010 KDE computer to the WinXP, but I can't open the documents with either OOo or MS Office over the network.  I can copy the program to a local hard drive and they open fine.  Or I can open them directly on the PCLOS machine and they open fine.  So why can't I open the document over the network?  I always could with my old PCLOS 2007 system.  Is there some permissions I don't have set properly?

There was a major upgrade to Samba since PCLOS 2007.

Some aspects of the way that Samba does authentication changed between the samba 2.xx series and the current 3.xx series.

I have not yet gone in and figured this stuff out since I never edit a document on another machine on the network anymore.

You might try mounting the file using smb4k. If it will mount, you may then be able to open it as a local document.

I'm not sure if I fully understand what you are saying.  I can view all the files over the network so isn't the drive already mounted?  The problem is, I would like to be able to read/write on the entire Home Folder not just one file.  Basically I want to share the entire HOME partition.

Also I just tried to save a document across the network and it won't save it either. Its almost like I don't have read/write permissions.  But they are checked in the permissions tab.  Also I can view pictures over my network and I can copy the data from it.  But I can't read or write documents.  I haven't tried to save any photos across my network.

Well I re did my network setup now I don't have access to anything.  It keeps prompting for a password.  I think I need to start over again.

I figured out my problem.  My computer name had a space in it.  I changed the name and it seems to work now.
