ATI drivers for Toshiba Sat. L455D-S5976 -ATI RS780mc (Radon HD3100)

Can't seem to get the video drivers on my laptop to work right.  They seem to install correctly, but crash the system within a couple of hours.  The only way I've been able to get the system back up is a complete reinstall.
On install, I have to specify the vesa drivers to get the LiveCD to boot up.  If I don't, I end up at a shell prompt.

Anyone have any success getting the drivers to work reliably?  I'm getting tired of reinstalling the OS.

what drivers are you using?

if you install a driver please use synaptic

if you don't install anything the system should use ati hd2000 and later

I'm installing the drivers in synaptic.  They seem to install just fine, run for a bit, then crash the whole computer.

Well,  I finally solved the problem.  I went out an bought  a new laptop with Intel video.  Every laptop I've ever had, that had ATI graphics, was a pain to get to work, if I could get it to work at all.  I've learned my lesson.  No more ATI for me.

i don't like intel but this netbook is behaving very well, i do like ati hardware, alot!!
