[SOLVED] nvidia geforce 310 video card query
« on: October 25, 2010, 03:40:50 AM »
Hi,

I'm running the new PCLinuxos2010.10 - fresh install.

I'm pretty sure my card has been detected correctly - 6100 and later; correct resolution.
I haven't had this system for long and I've never had a card that could run groovy effects and often wondered what I was missing.

Now when I look in the PCC>Hardware section I see this:

Shouldn't there be an entry for configure effects?  Maybe I need to tick a box somewhere?

Hugh

So do I, but it's for Compiz fusion : to get the cube rotating ! In the "Configure video card" section there is an entry for "Options" and you get to set up the 3 D, compositing and mouse acceleration there.

Did you have to tick a box to make Configure 3D Desktop Effects appear?

Maybe Compiz fusion has been removed in this new release.

The options that are mentioned were already enabled.

Enable Translucency
Use hardware accelerated mouse display
Enable RENDER acceleration

There's always been an option to configure 3d stuff even when my graphics card could not deliver the goods.

Where can it have gone?

Are either or both of you using 2010.7 which you have dutifully updated?

There is nvidia on one of my machines only and I don't use if with my distro at the moment, but to make remasters (for which I don't need to enable 3 D... ).

Check that you have libmesagl1 and mesa-demo installed, then type in your console:
Code: [Select]
$ glxinfo | grep rendering
Here, with GC Intel 945 the output returns:

direct rendering: Yes

Same here.

I'm suspecting that the video card is not as properly detected as I think it is.

I have tried a Livecd pclinuxos 2010.2 and Live cd pclinuxos 2010.7 and the option for configure 3d desktop effects is available in both of these releases.

I've just ten or fifteen minutes ago removed via synaptic the nvidia173 and 96xxx package. My thinking being that if the wrong package was selected then this would force the right one.

There is still no option for compiz fusion.

I could also I suppose remove the dkms-nvidia-current from synaptic then try to have it redetected or run xfdrake or video from the command line I expect I'll be dropped to whjen I do this.

Do you happen to know the sequence of events from the root prompt?

Hugh

edit: I allowed the system to re-detect the 6100 series or better but nothing changed in PCC. There is still no option for 3D Desktop Effects.
It has to be this ISO. I'll wait and see if anyone else has problems. The ISOs at the time of writing haven't been officially announced. Fresh installers rather than rolling updaters might be able to confirm what I see or don't see, I should say.

Hi,

You graphic card works perfectly and the direct rendering is enabled. If you want to configure compiz and enable 3 D effects install Drak3D.

drak3d
3D desktop effects tools

This should add the missing section in your PCC (or else I didn't understand everything... )

In the new version of KDE 2010.10 the 3D section isn't in PCC - if you open Synaptic and install task-3ddesktop you will then see an option in PCC

This is how I got my effects up and running in one of my VBox machines and it works a treat.

I didn't have to touch Compiz or anything - it just worked.

BUT on my main KDE machine I haven't even done that. I just use the KWin manager by enabling it in

Configure Your Desktop >> Workspace Appearance & Behaviour  >> Desktop Effects >> All Effects

That way the task-3ddesktop doesn't need installing

Edit: I posted here about some of the changes I'd come across in 2010.10

Incredible ! And why does it install metacity along with compiz packages ? Compiz is already a window manager, so is metacity so I don't quite sere the point there ?

Well it looks like I'll have to install the task 3d thingummy OR install the minime 2010.10 ISO and build from a lesser base.

I'll enjoy that,

Thanks for the input from all who gave freely of their knowledge in this thread,
