(SOLVED)install pclos on toshiba netbook w/ Win7 starter
« on: October 24, 2010, 07:36:43 PM »
I am having problems trying to install pclos 10.7 on the hard drive. I have been using a pin-drive for the past couple of months  and pclos works fine. I want to have it standalone on the netbook so I can install virtual box and run amateur radio program via xp pro.
I have downloaded unetbootin and partedmagic with no problems and have partitioned the drive as per instructions and have down loaded the latest pclos iso file for the kde desktop. However when I select unetbootin from the bootloader menu to install pclos it hangs at plymouth starter and goes to the splash screen.
I have uninstalled and reinstall the unetbootin and pclos file several time with the same result.
help please. I am beginning to think the pclinuxos-kde-2010.07 file has a problem with win7 starter?
Any help would sure be appreciated!

Jim,

First of all, welcome home to PCLinuxOS! And, you're right in my neck of the woods. I'm right over in Independence, MO.

To make a LiveUSB that you can use to install PCLinuxOS to your netbook, you may want to open the Synaptic package manager, and search for/install the Live USB Creator. It's a recent addition to the PCLinuxOS repository, and was created by JohnBoy, with some assistance from the PCLinuxOS community. I find that it works much better than uunetbootin.

Thanks for the welcome and the tip.

I was looking for the Live USB Creator last night and downloaded a some files that my current pin-drive installation didn't like. Guess I will blow that out and redo it.

I could not find "Live USB Creator" as an installed program on my kde4 install of pclos. went searching and got in trouble!

Thanks again and will be back when I have more questions.

Jim :)

Hi JnK,
I installed PCLOS on a new toshiba for my wife new out of the box. I didn't have to do anything other than run the pclos livecd and resize the ntfs win7 partition with the partitioner  in the livecd and then make a / (root), swap and home partitions with the unused space from the resizing of the win7 partition. It installed just fine and dual boots using GRUB altough she doesn't boot to win7 it will.

I finally loaded my thumb drive on my desktop and fired up pclos. Amazing what having enough screen real estate  and a more fresh mind will do... I downloaded and have USB Creator installed on my thumb drive and will do some more work tomorrow. Monday should have  been skipped except for this small victory....
This old dog has sore legs from trying to learn some new tricks!  :)

All

I got the pclcos on the USB stick and am using it right now.
After many "cockpit" errors Live USB Creator installed and installed/worked  easily.

The only thing I thought odd was
under app launcher the program took some time to track down
app launcher>system>isowriter (only choice)
then I went looking and found it
app launcher>More Apps>Configuration>live usb creator

having fun now and will get this installed on the netbook this evening and begin
playing with virtual box soon

Regards,

Jim ;D
