Hi there,

I have a fully updated system (KDE 4.5.2, update from the most current repo, no PASS) and today I found that when I apply changes in system settings my whole system freezes. After Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and logging in again the changes are applied.

I reinstalled a couple of packages of which I thought one could be the culprit. Blew up my complete system settings (desktop, localisation) and after running addlocale I found that the same error occured again. I could apply changes to the desktop theme (e.g. change the theme of the analog clock), but when I wanted to change the colour theme the system froze again.

Is there anybody out there with the same problem and maybe anyone with an idea how to fix this? Or is it a known problem?

my system: Lenovo Thinkpad X61 Tablet, Core2Duo 1.66, Intel graphics (desktop effects tweaked to run well on intel graphics).

Thanks everyone!!  ;D

Can you tell us what apps were installed that you think may be causing the problem?

Have you tried doing a full reboot?
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Hi Menotu,

yes, I rebooted several times, before and after re-installing the packages.

I have no idea what may be causing the problem, as the system was (and is) running smoothly. Only noticed the freeze when trying to change system settings. That's why I reinstalled a number of KDE workspace related things.

When shutting down there's always an error with rdc.something (will have to check tonight), don't know if that's anything to do with the problem.

After installation of PCLOS in March I had added a number of apps, some widgets, color and plasma themes, the usual stuff, I guess. All from the repos, nothing queer.

I had applied the kernel patch Texstar had posted and found no problems afterwards. Can I undo that patch? It was the only change I made outside Synaptic. I know the patch might affect the network which it didn't in my case. Could it have side effects?

Thank you

Have you tried installing the previous kernel version from synaptic and choosing it at boot splash?

I'm still running 2.6.33.7-5pclos-bfs, have not updated the kernel yet.

OK, just wondering because I had a lot of freezing up until trying older kernel in repo and this fixed me.

No problems with any applications I'm using (as far as I saw), only freezes when applying changes in system settings....

Will start from a console later, see if I get (error) messages.

Thx all

Hmm, no messages in the console, freezes like the rest of the system  >:(

I guess I'll get me a the latest ISO and reinstall...  :-\

But it's kinda funny as nothing else seems to be affected...

Preparing for re-install
« Reply #8 on: October 28, 2010, 03:04:28 AM »
Hi everybody,

after I was willing to just accept the problem of system freeze when applying changes in system settings I was encountered yesterday with the fact that Synaptic won't start from the menu, only from the console. Very similar to the problem posted here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,78402.0.html

So, I'm preparing to reinstall PCLOS with the latest ISO.

Apart from formatting "/" should I rename or delete any files/folders on my "/home" directory to prepare for a flueless re-install?

Thank you for assisting.

I personally backup all my data and settings etc to somewhere safe and create and format both /root and /home partitions and then copy my data back over once I have my system setup as I like it.

Along with the "regular" backups I also export config settings and themes from apps like FileZilla, luckyBackup (and Emerald when I used it) etc.

But that's only my preference........

Hi Menotu,

thanks for the advice. I guess that'll be the best way to go.

So regardarding the .files and .directories from my /home partition, I'll just keep the ones with settings, right? Could I also keep my desktop settings over a reinstall or should I remake them from scratch to avoid trouble?
