WEP settings
« on: October 24, 2010, 12:16:50 AM »
new to networking.pclos 2009 on thinkpadT20

Have setup wireless connectionbetween  linksys WRT54G w/less router and netgear WG111v3 receiver. Am currently set with no encryption just to get it working, but now need to learn to provide minimal security.

linksys manual indicates to use a passphrase to generate several keys if using ALL linksys products. Doing so generates 4 keys, how are these used?

receiver (usb wless device) is not linksys product so am supposed to enter a key on one of the text boxes and not use the router generator.

This may sound silly but if I set a passprase and then disconnect and try to reconnect, is it as simple as entering the key or passphrase on the laptop to log in or do I need to configure matching settings on laptop thru PCC networking? I

I want to be able to login to the admin page of the router! I suppose I could just hit reset on router if I get stuck, but would like to understand whats going on.

Any help appreciated

PCLOS 2009? You may want to grab the 2010 release.

WEP is better than nothing, but is very insecure. WAP2 is the preferred. Your router should offer to create a key, then you simply provide that key on each machine when you try to connect to router. I've only used wireless myself for about the last year, is actually pretty straight forward. Simply run whatever setup wizard is available on your router, choose WAP or WAP2 (WEP is better than nothing, but only barely) create the key, save settings, then enter the key on the connecting machines when they  ask for it.
There is no shame in saying "I don't know".

Hello Trio3b
As Xero mentioned, have a look at getting the latest PCLOS 2010 release, there are some notable upgrades.

Xero already answered what you need but also have a read through this step-by-step: http://register.wireless.utoronto.ca/?page=linksys

When your kernel developer or packager writes more code than what you can download, 'you know ...TIA!

Yes use WAP if at all possible .......  it may depend on the wireless capabilities of whatever you have on the laptop.

I use as a passphrase, words that have meaning for me, jumbled together so that I can remember them.

When you set up your connection in PCC and enter the passphrase, it will be remembered, so no problem reconnecting.

Yes, thank you. I understand now the disadvantage of WEP but since it took so long to setup the connection i was  more concerned that adding encryption will set me back another several days.

Will attempt WAP, WAP2 etc., and post back

Is 2010 using KDE4? If so I am very comfortable with MDV 2008.1 and PCLOS2009.1 as I need the least disruption in my business. I will give 2010 a go later when time permits.

Thanks

linksys WRT54G router recommends WEP settings. Tried and connects but very, very slowly. Pages take forever to load. Even adjusting settings on router via wless take long or never finish loading.

Reconfigured router via ethernet with WPA pre shared , deleted wlan0 and WEP settings in PCC, rebooted, added new wless interface and key in PCC using the preshare key and cannot connect at all.

Thoughts? If I need to be in console, please send code and would be happy to post output.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
