PUEL vs OSE?
« on: October 23, 2010, 09:25:31 AM »
I have a question about running PCLinuxOS in the PUEL version of VirtualBox. PCL obviously comes with guest additions installed but it's recommended to use the PUEL versions according to VB. Everything seems to work fine with the defaults; shared folders, mouse integration, full screen etc. Although I'm not sure the shared clipboard or 3D hardware support is working as it should. So, should I uninstall all the built in guest additions and install the PUEL version? And if so, any pitfalls I should know about before I panic? lol

thanks

I don't think there's any difference in the Guest Additions, but VB will sometimes nag if the version of the GA doesn't match that of the application. It seems to be a simple string comparison, so you'll get nagged when the software is identical apart from the edition part of the string. I've never found any mismatch between GA and application functionally, even over several upgrades of VB, so I suspect the GAs tend to stay the same most of the time, whatever their "version".

As for the problems with shared clipboard, that's a long-standing known bug in VB, which they might get round to fixing one day...

ok thanks for the info. I did uninstall the dkms OSE additions while I was waiting. I left the mouse and video driver alone. installed the PUEL GAs and it seems to work about the same. To be honest I have more issues for some reason with PCLinuxOS as a guest than most. But is no big deal. Except for the fact that recently I had tried to install and update the e17 version and saw this morning it was pulled. probably why it failed 3 or 4 times lol. While I'm here, I couldn't get Zen to install on the SATA contoller to save my life. But my VB file/s may have been corrupted. all's well that ends well.
