netgear WG111v3 [SOLVED]
« on: October 19, 2010, 08:46:19 PM »
running PCLOS 2009.1 on Thinkpad T21

Total newb to wireless. Never did it in Windows either. I have a LinksysWRT54G wireless router v4 that is supposed to be linux compatible as they changed in v5. So just connected via ethernet wire to see if I could access router control panel via browser, entered 192.168.1.1 and that seems to work ok.

Now I disconnected the ethernet and inserted netgear wireless USB WG111v3 and went to PCC. Unit is detected and it asks for bunch of stuff I don't understand

"managed" ad hoc, etc, tried several
SSID - linksys manual says to insert "linksys"
encryption -  set at none

finished wizard and insert default http://192.168.1.1 and nothing

I notice the rtl8187 driver is loaded during boot but http://linux-wless.passys.nl support page indicates driver is in 2.6.27 or later but pclos is 2.6.24.

 lsusb shows the unit recognized.

What can I do to get the correct driver installed?

Any help appreciated
Thanks

[UPDATE]:  kernel update from pclos2007 repos did the trick. upgrade all installed software. I'm sure not all of it had to be but did it anyway. THen reboot, then install 2.6.27.31tex5 and reboot and Netgear WG111v3 driver is compiled into the kernel. The only funk is PCC network wizard indicated connectivity problem but connection seems fine through subsequent reboots and am able to user connect and disconnect w/o hangs (unlike the 2.6.26 kernel) so am marking this solved.

first have you read throught this one

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,56672.0.html

You may understand what it is about, if so you will probably get great information.

Here is one way of getting more specific information.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,80859.msg669993.html#msg669993

In the 3rd konsole listing instead of lspci you should use lsusb for a USB dongle

I notice you are still on 2009.1 that could throw up some interesting points  ;D

Here's what I've done so far:

1. PCC hdwr lists the netgear wg111v3 but lists it as unknown
2. console lsusb shows device as using rtl8187 driver.
3.since lsmod only showed rtl8187se I d/l windows driver from realtek
4. unpacked onto desktop
5. opened console: ndiswrapper -i wg111v3.inf   installed OK
6 went to PCC - configure new connection - two options:
a.  netgear wireless WG111v3 - went thru wizard - cannot get wlan0 up
b. tried with ndiswrapper - indicates has been configured already (b/c I did it via console) - continued anyway -nothing

7. console: ndiswrappper -e wg111v3.inf - then used ndiswrapper -l to confirm removal
8. back to PCC - networking - again tried both options wg111v3 - nothing
b. use ndiswrapper-  point it to wg111v3 - installs - go thru wizard -  try the 192.168.1.1 - nothing
9. remove wlan0 via PCC (that's probably why no wlan shows up

10. stuck

Heard about blacklisting drivers in /etc but not sure. maybe we need to stop the rtl8187 and somehow load the rtl8187B if I even have that.

Any help appreciated
Thanks

what do you mean by "finished wizard and insert default http://192.168.1.1 and nothing "

you are supposed to configure your wireless card to be in "managed" mode

Quote
wlan0     Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:22:3F:FF:7C:DB
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

The above quoted part says your system properly saw the wireless device and configured it and it is ready to be used. The reason you can not go online is probably due to it not getting an ip address from the access point.

can you unplug it, plug it back in and wait for around ten seconds and then type this command on the terminal and they copy and paste its output here?

dmesg | tail -n 50

Well I go thru the  PCC networking wizard and tried ad hoc / SSID = linksys / encryption = none and also tried managed  with other settings same

When I hook up this laptop with ethernet, I am able to access the WRT54G woreless routers setup panel via Firefox with 192.1681.1 but cannot with the netgear wireless USB device: At this point I believe I have removed  wlan0 via PCC and also removed wWindows wg111v3 driver via console using : ndiswrapper -e wg111v3 just to start fresh

Turn off password requirement for now in your access point(router), let solve one problem at a time.

look at those first lines of the output, they show that you can not access the router because the key is not being accepted and hence you are not allowed to join the network.

Those output says "ndiswrapper" is the one controlling the card, remove its driver, delete the connection in pcc, disconnect the card, wait for around ten seconds, reconnect the card, start pcc, and reconfigure a new wireless connection and dont use "ndiswrapper" windows driver, use linux native one if it is being seen and then type that command when you are done, what does it say?

1. Again new to wireless. Netgear says to use software to disconnect a wireless device - much like a flashdrive. I'm assuming these USB devices are hotplug/unpluggable?

2. Are you saying to connect via ethernet wired adapter and change psswd on router?  i think default is "admin". I will have to learn to do this.

3. When using ndispwrapper I notice PCC says "this device is already configured using rtl8187" do you want to continue? This tell me that kernel is using native linux driver but I already tried that. Also chart at wireless lan support http://linux-wless.passys.nl indicates this device is supported in kernel 2.6.27 and later but pclos2009 kernel I'm using is 2.6.26.8 . Is it possible to blacklist the rtl 8187 native driver and use ndiswrapper?

I have heard blacklist but don't know how to do it.

here is output you asked for without using ndiswrapper. This detects rtl8187B chip and indicates that the native driver is experimental and could damage hdwr. below that is output AFTER attempting to access router.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

can you put outputs of commands in "code" tags? it is easier to read that way and it takes less space.

Those output says the card is recognized and a module called "rtl8187" is loaded to handle it, so far so good since "dmesg" commands says the kernel isnt complaining about anything. It is possible to blacklist the driver but we still dont know yet if the driver is the problem.

The problem could one of these:
1. The computer cant associate with the wireless access point due to a bad password or a bug somewhere in encryption handling btw the computer and access point. Having an open access point will eliminate the need for an encrypted wireless network.  I was not asking you to change the password or your router, i was asking to set your wireless network to not require a password to use it, essentially making it an "open wireless network" requiring no password to connect to it.This part answers your question number two.

2. The computer can associate correctly with the access point but it is denied an ip address for some reason and it is not set to use a static one. This will put blame on the network set up, not the wireless card.

now, on the terminal, while you have the card unplugged from the computer, type the first command, plug in the card to your computer, wait for around 10 seconds and then type the second command and give its output here

service syslog restart

cat /var/log/syslog  | tail -n 100

Those above two commands will show if your computer attempts to associate with the access point, ask for an ip address, if it is denied one and where an error occur.
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

You are probably looking for more in dmesg but this one, dmesg | egrep "rtl|wlan" sort of filters out a bit of the extras. An example from my system (wlan0 is turned off), I have trimmed off identical lines.

Code: [Select]
[gert@localhost ~]$  dmesg | egrep "rtl|wlan"
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
...
wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:22:b0:97:bb:e6 (try 1)
[gert@localhost ~]$

the network device does come up and it just sits there, it doesnt attempt to associate to a network or ask for an ip address. Your kernel is not complaining about the wireless network device and i see no reason why we should think there is any problem with how the kernel is relating to the card.

Start pcc, go to network and internet -> set up new network interface -> wireless and go through the process and make sure you choose "automatic IP" at one of the stages. I do not have a wireless card at the moment and i can not go through the steps to make sure i have everything correct so someone will have to help me here but you should be able to see a list of wireless networks in your area, yours and your neighbors if you have any with wireless networks.

I have gone thru the PCC wireless "setup"  8-10 times by now and do see networks, but the number of networks and which networks they are change each time. Is this normal?

wizard finishes with "congratulations, network is finished, pleasse restartx-environment ...."

Then using Firefox http://192.168.1.1 produces error page "firefox cannot establish a connection to server at ...."

ping in console produces "network is unreachable"

Just hooked up ethernet and router asks for login and psswd which is "admin" for both and am able to login.  If wireless were connected wouldn't it also ask for a login prompt? Also, wireless section of router allows for several radio frequencies and requires all network devices to use the same freq. How do I know what freq the Netgear usb wless is using? There is no indication on unit or packaging.

Also in the network configuration window, the wireless orange icon never turns green after I select "connect" like it does with the ethernet connection.

If I install the 8187B drivers will they show up in synaptic so I can remove them later if necessary? Also will I need to blacklist the default 8187 drivers and how to do that?

Thanks

It is normal for a list of networks to change on refresh, it depends on how on the strength of the signal the card is getting. It will display them if they are over a certain value and not if they are under. Access point that are far from you and hence has a weaker signal will show up and disappear more often.

Do you see your own wireless network on the list? all access points on the list will have icons on them, green mean an open wifi, a yellowish on means protected with WEP encryption and a deep yellowing one means protected with WPA encryption. Yours show up with what color? Do you see any with green color? click to join this network and you should be able to go online.

The password to access the router is different from the password to join a wireless network if the network is protected.

Try to go to google.com or yahoo.com on your browser. The wireless network could be operating on a different network address and that is why that address fail.

after you get those congratulations, open the terminal and type this command and copy and paste its output here:

ifconfig

My linksys_SES_36218 shows up  green with 50% signal strength (router is 6 ft away). with operating mode managed. Last time it showed up 100% strength. several others are in list at low strength orange.

I select network , hit connect, then configure and connect buttons grey out., but device icon in network center and tray icon are still orange. Cannot connect to anything Google or otherwise.

Ran across athread in Suse forums one of authors of rtl8187 indicates that it supports 8187B

UPDATE: I set encryption mode to none but keeps resetting to WPA/WPA2 pre-shared key. Can't find any setting on router (when using etherent) to set no encryption.

ifconfig produces:

ok, your wireless point is not password protected so you shouldnt need a password to join it

what does this command give you? (copy and paste it on the terminal and enter root's password when asked

su -c "cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0"
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..
