Hi guys,

For the first time in well over two and a half blissful years 8), I have run up against a problem with PCLOS that I haven't been able to find a solution for.

The problem is that recently (i.e. the last 2 weeks) my computer will be extremely disobedient during bootup. GRUB comes up just fine but once it goes past that the computer will shutdown, i.e. as if the power cord was pulled.

Here's the weird thing though, it will do that during three attempts or so, but then it will boot normally without any problems. On a few occasions it will also get all the way to the desktop and then shutdown.

So far I've checked all the connections (inside and out with no luck), tried a different kernel (still no luck) and tried booting with no acpi, in which case it gets past GRUB and barely begins loading before shutting down.

Since it only began happening a few weeks ago I suspect it is a software glitch, but I may be mistaken.

Does anyone have any ideas.

BTW it is a custom box with AMD 64 X2 5600+ that's fully up to date.

I did check the thermal paste on the CPU and it's OK as far as my limited knowledge can tell. The motherboard may be showing its age but the CPU was only put in c. 6 months ago.

pull out your memory, clean and re insert

I gave this a shot but to no avail. :(

I have found that if I leave the GRUB up for a couple of minutes, it will boot just fine.

On a related note, I tend to cut power to the PC when I'm not using it (in other words most of the day), would that have any bearing on my troubles?

generally speaking the hardware will last less time when turned on and off constantly

leave your hardware on more time will make it last longer but this will make it use more electricity

it is hard to balance this

honestly in a house a refrigerator, a washer machine or a microwave oven will use 10 times more power than any pc, specially when you have small lcd screens(under 22 inches) so it is better to leave it on to make it last longer and have it ready all the time

this is why is so popular low power usage cpus this days, atom from intel and amd cpus are special for this, do more when using less power

new motherboards use solid state capacitors that will last longer, 50000 hours supposedly, 10 years of constant use theoretically compared to capacitors inflated after two years or less

I had same problem, reboots 3 or 4 times then everything is ok,i'm running duel boot with xp
If i start computer and boot into windows i do not get a problem.
I unplugged everything and reseated cpu with new paste, cleaned contacts on memory, connectors and gave my computer innards a general spring clean and still the same.
This problem started a few days ago after an update.
I downloaded 2010.10 and installed, everything is ok now.
With a few people having the same problems in the last week or so,it seems a coincidence that everybody's hardware is going down at the same time.

I was having a similar problem with shutdowns.  At first I thought for sure it was either KDE or PCLOS related (software).  However, I believe I finally fixed it by changing my memory timing settings in the BIOS from "Auto" to what I believed they should be.  No shutdowns in the past 24 hours where before I couldn't go 2-3 minutes.  However, I also started off with a fresh install of 2010.10 about this same time whereas for the prior few days I was installing 2010.07 so maybe there was a coincidence ?

Anyway, since you have done everything else, consider checking or changing your memory timing settings to something a bit more conservatory.

Still restarting at grub,i have tried downloading to an earlier kernel version and still it reboots at grub, however if i boot into xp everything is ok,i thought i had it sorted after i installed 2010.10,but not so,at the moment it is in a continuous loop.
i.e
gets to grub starts 2010 then restarts computer
my cpu is p4 3.4 hyperthreading, starting in safemode it restarts the computer when detects cpu1

On a side note my heatsink is a passive pipe and cooled with a fan blowing over it(dell 8300)is it possible that pclinux is telling me my cpu is on it's way out where as xp is not(i have reseated with new paste, imposible to say the temps as 8300's do not have a sensor)

sounds like possible problems with the files system, fsck could help here?

can you turn off hiperthreading?

Plug the cord back into the power supply, then turn on the switch.  ;D
