PCManFM and file names with blank spaces
« on: October 17, 2010, 08:49:15 AM »
Hi, after the latest bunch of updates for LXDE PCManFM refuses to do simple file operations (like copying) on files with blank spaces in their file names. I have a number of them for better readability.
A dialogue pops up saying file or directory not found:

Quote
:Fehler beim Untersuchen der Datei /home/user/file%20name.pdf mit fstat(): Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden

However, it is still possible to drag and drop the same files between two different tabbed directories.  ???

I'm sure you've heard this before, but it generally isn't a good idea to use spaces in file names. Instead, try using either the underscore (_), period (.), or dash (-) characters in place of the spaces. Using these instead of spaces helps preserve readability.

+1 on that. Unix/Linux and generally all *nix systems dislike the file and directory names with spaces. Even in a console, while typing, even with "tab", if you get 2 files that start same and get a blank later, good luck ! (A trick in this case consists in putting a " around the name).

Even "." should be used with care, as all that's after a dot can be seen as a name extension and treated as such.

I've followed the convention of naming files all the years, but recent distros (including PCLinuxOS) have turned me into a lazy bugger.  ;)

Ok, this has been reported as a bug at the Lxde bug tracker, so as I was there I logged in and added a comment to point to here:
