KDE4 Desktop ..... 2 questions
« on: October 17, 2010, 04:44:34 AM »
There are some threads which mention these two situations but I am not sure they have been adequately answered .....  or I am just being dense .......  either way I need to ask ......

2010 KDE4 fully updated.
4 virtual Desktops
All dektops as Desktop activity and not Folder view.
Different Widgets for each Desktop is selected.
Kwin Desktop effects is on. Compiz not.

The questions:

1.
How do I determine which of the four Desktops is the default one to display when booting cold.
Is there some box to tick or such, through which I can easily change from one Desktop to a different one on the next boot?

2.
Adding link/launcher/icon/widget to the desired desktop:  From the menu, right click an application entry, select to add to Desktop .............  how to determine which of the four Desktops it appears on? Presently they all seem to want to land on the one Desktop .....  contrary to the 'different widgets for each Desktop' selection.

***

Hopefully those are two clear questions with simple answers .......  even if the answers are 'not presently possible' I do not care. At least that would be a definitive answer.

Yes, through some convoluted doings I can get the desired widgets on the Desktop I wish ......  but surely this is not the desired situation?

Lastly but not least .......  I do not wish to hear about Folder view or folder widgets. Not interested in this situation. I just want to deal with the simple setup I described and the two questions.

Thanks for reading and hopefully someone will have some info to get this sorted.  ;)

regards.

Here on my KDE it's always the virt. desktop 1 if I don't place an autostarting apps that are set to run at a particular v. desktop.
If I place them (and I do) I land at the desktop where the slowest starting app is set to start.

E.g. I have three autostarting apps set to start in different desktops - Firefox not set to a desktop, Krusader set to start in v.d. 2 and linuxdc++ in v.d. 4.
So I land to v.d. 4 or 2 depending on that if Krusader loads faster than linuxdc++ or not.

how about going first to a desktop you want to add the application entry on and then click the menu and then drag the application to the desktop. Make sure the desktop is in an unlocked state though

The icons from the menu do not 'drag' ....

Can the Desktops be locked?
I know widgets can but have not heard of the Desktops being locked .......  so I have no idea if they are or not.
How to unlock? .......  or check if they are locked?

Widgets are not locked

just looked at this a little bit closer and this is what i have found out. KDE ships with two application launchers, application launcher and application launcher menu. PClinuxos uses application launcher menu and this does not allow icons to be dropped on the desktop from the menu but application launcher does.

I use application launcher and it works here and i just assume it also works in application launcher(my bad)

You can temporarily add the application launcher and then drag the icons you want and then remove it as a workaround while waiting for a solution.

i meant locking and unlocking of the widget, i just tested it again and icons on the traditional menu(pclinuxos default) can not be dragged and dropped on the desktop but icons on the

yes, the desktop can be locked but i meant locked widget in this case, bad use of terminologies on my part ..

muungwana,
Thank you for your time on this ..........  you have indeed pointed me in the right direction it seems.

Icons from the Kickoff Menu can be dragged to the Desktop
Icons from the Classic menu cannot

The only difference I can see between
Application Launcher   and
Application Launcher Menu

is the style used.

I added Application Launcher to the panel, changed the style and it became Application Launcher Menu.

Anyway  ........  I have an answer to my question, for which I thank you.

If I want Icons on my Desktop I can switch to Kickoff and drag the Icons to my Desktop.

Half-way there!          ;D ;D

I am glad one of your problem is solved, there is no reason why one will allow dropping of icons on the desktop and the other will not and i think this is a bug and should be reported.

lets say you have 17 desktops, each configured to use its own activity, how do you tell the icon to show up on desktop 13? The answer to this question was what he was seeking.

The above works if all desktops are configured to use the same activity.
