Installing questions on Virtual Box
« on: October 17, 2010, 01:39:10 AM »
Install by getvirtualbox or task-virtualbox or both?... or none ;D

Want to install VirtualBox in KDE-FullMonty.

I see two installing apps in Synaptic: getvirtualbox and task-virtualbox.
I don't know which one have to use for installing? Or use both? :-\

Thanks.

Getvirtualbox installs virtualbox with USB support. task-virtualbox installs vb OSE edition, i.e. without USB support.

Wouldn't most users want the VB with USB support?    If there is some significant reason why one would not use the USB support version please let us know.

I can think of two reasons. There are likely more.

The first is the reason why I use the task-virtualbox (without USB): I only need access to my external hard drives via USB, and I can get that in VBox by using Shared Folders. If I had to hook up something else, like a printer, then I'd reconsider, but since all my files are stored somewhere outside Virtual Windows, they are easy to print via Linux. And I don't use Windows enough to need USB hookups for anything else, but this is an obvious YMMV.

The second reason can be found on another post: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,81237.msg673273.html#msg673273 Not that it would bother me, just a few more megabytes of manual update, but again - YMMV.

A third reason is ... freedom. The OSE is open source. The other isn't.

I don't think that you can have both installed. If you have task-virtualbox installed, I believe the script for getvirtual box will uninstall task-virtualbox.  I'm not sure about the other way around though.

I got this from a thread in the Forum. Can't remember what thread though.

Slightly edited ;) the name of the thread because have some more questions on it.
So...

1. Installed by getvirtualbox and there installed Windows XP sp1+2.

Edit: I realised that I installed Oracle VM Virtual Box Non-OSE so the following question about installing OSE additions is stupid. :( You have not to read further.

2.
- Now the mouse (serial) doesn't work in the Windows area. Clicking on it always gives me the warning about capturing the mouse with the buttons "Capture" and "Cancel" but the mouse doesn't work when I choose to capture. (edit: there was a warning that Windows can't work with the mouse at the current screen resolution which was 1280x1024; changed to 1600x1200 but that didn't help)
- The Windows area is too small and won't expand with expanding the VB window.

I went to Synaptic and saw there I can install:
  • dkms-virtualbox which is Kernel support for VirtualBox OSE;
  • dkms-vboxadditions - Kernel module for VirtualBox OSE additions and
  • virtualbox-guest-additions - allows to share files with the host system.

All of them want to uninstall getvirtualbox; I think it's a metapackage and it can be uninstalled w/o damaging VB itself.

I hope this could help me for the mouse/screen issues but I am not sure.

3. So I'd like to kindly ask should I install them?
