In Synaptic > Settings > Preferences > Files tab -- make sure that Delete downloaded packages after installation is chosen. If Leave all downloaded packages in the cache is chosen, unchoose it.
Was able to stop by for a few minutes & noticed yours and Wildman's postes- seemed like easy to check.

I was really surprised to find that the install selected this by default??  But have corrected it-- and will allow it to update again---  hopefully this was all that was wrong

Thank you for your patience and continued thoughts

Well, wishful thinking on my part, I'm afraid.
Just a little history- if I may-- I ruined the last "fresh install" by trying something on my own.  I remembered that once there was a big update that involved updating gtx+2.0 all by itself- and then you went back and updated everything else.  Well-- all that did this time is break the graphic display, and "startx" didn't do a thing.  So, I rebooted-- again thinking that wouldn't do any harm--- and I was wrong again--- now I couldn't boot.  That didn't cost me much- so just did a NEW fresh install.... no harm done [I'm posting from that- works fine].  Went in and checked the thing Neal had me check-- corrected it as per instructions, cleared the cache, set up the repositories & ready to try again.

I just tried updating-- said there were 444 to update, etc., etc.-- fine--- and let it update.
Synaptic finished its thing, but gave me a message that 41 files were unable to be downloaded [that's when I discovered that I didn't know how to take a screenshot that Melodie asked me to poste-- strange, but I thought I had done that before].
Again, I couldn't close Synaptic as I was warned that some changes had not be applied [same message as before].
I cleared the cache again-- and went into <Edit> and selected <unmark>.  That allowed me to close Synaptic.

The install works great-- and I may have to waite until the next quarterly update of the Live CD- but still unable to update this fresh install.  That's where I am right now. [Just wanted to update you before returning to work]

Hi,

If it's to use to your older machines, you might want to try Openbox Mini RC6. The choice there is to delete packages after they were installed, and also it's all up to date.

What do you think ?

PS: to take a screenshot open a console and type:

Code: [Select]
scrot -c -d 6 myscreenshot.png
where -c is "count", -d is "delay", 6 is a number of seconds (choose more, or less) and "myscreenshot.png" the name you want to give it, with png extension.

The count down leaves you the time to push the console or to lower it to the panel applications tray.

The default behavior for synaptic is to not keep the downloaded packages. Was this changed for your last openbox release, Melodie?

Screenie offers the opportunity to take shots of open windows as well as the whole screen.

This is possible.

Didn't it use to pull in many depends ?

Well now it looks reasonable:

Les NOUVEAUX paquets suivants seront installés :
  gpicview screenie xwd

What happens here, is it not possible to use the buttons from the editor of the forum anymore ?

Small app - small dependencies. The "biggest" is gpicview, which is not at all big and already installed on LXDE. Is it on openbox? (I forget. LOL)

Thanks for the screenie- helped a lot

You will notice in the image below (sorry it is so large) that same thing happened- 41 files unable to be downloaded from:
# rpm http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributions/pclinuxos/apt/
(similar results before doing the new install-- on other repositories)

Tried once again to close Synaptic and told the same thing:
Quote
"There are still marked changes that have not yet been applied; they will get lost if you choose to quit synaptic".

Here is the image taken toward the end of the update process:
