Well, wishful thinking on my part, I'm afraid.
Just a little history- if I may-- I ruined the last "fresh install" by trying something on my own. I remembered that once there was a big update that involved updating gtx+2.0 all by itself- and then you went back and updated everything else. Well-- all that did this time is break the graphic display, and "startx" didn't do a thing. So, I rebooted-- again thinking that wouldn't do any harm--- and I was wrong again--- now I couldn't boot. That didn't cost me much- so just did a NEW fresh install.... no harm done [I'm posting from that- works fine]. Went in and checked the thing Neal had me check-- corrected it as per instructions, cleared the cache, set up the repositories & ready to try again.
I just tried updating-- said there were 444 to update, etc., etc.-- fine--- and let it update.
Synaptic finished its thing, but gave me a message that 41 files were unable to be downloaded [that's when I discovered that I didn't know how to take a screenshot that Melodie asked me to poste-- strange, but I thought I had done that before].
Again, I couldn't close Synaptic as I was warned that some changes had not be applied [same message as before].
I cleared the cache again-- and went into <Edit> and selected <unmark>. That allowed me to close Synaptic.
The install works great-- and I may have to waite until the next quarterly update of the Live CD- but still unable to update this fresh install. That's where I am right now. [Just wanted to update you before returning to work]
