(Solved) Printerdrake not functional
« on: October 16, 2010, 07:16:48 PM »
I was prompted to start up a new thread on this since it is not the same as the printer access problem in another thread.
I am running PClinuxOS 2010 and have updated since yesterday (10/15/10).
PrinterDrake only has two button not grayed out and is completely unresponsive.

Anyone had similar issues?

Sorry, I failed to mention that the printer is not connected directly to the computer in question.  The printer is on another computer which is also running PClinuxOS and both are connected by a local network.

After finding that I could install some other programs without a segmentation fault occurring I tried to completely remove CUPS and re-install with Synaptic.  the resulting configuration failed to re-boot.  I then re-installed the system from scratch with the live-CD.  I made sure a printer was connected during the installation.  The system upon first boot recognized the printer and allowed the printer to be correctly configured.  I have not tried the network connection yet, but at least PrinterDrake operates normally and CUPS service is not being stopped.

I may have forgotten to add on previous posts that when PrinterDrake would not run correctly I would check the CUPS service only to find that it was stopped and the start on boot check box was unchecked.

I am not sure what changed in the configuration but re-installing from scratch seems to have fixed many things.

Ugly!

I don't have a printer and never played with that stuff.  Been watching your struggle.  Hope you get it all working to your liking.

Well that's a really helpful statement.

Anyway, I don't know if I am 'the other thread' but I am sure missing the original printerdrake function.

I tried the intuitive http://localhost:631/admin to set up a printer and get 'Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME' on one machine, and another machine it works.

Did you get your printer running over the network?
I also tried reinstalling various suggestions, and my CUPS server always is on when I have checked.

Thanks.

What's a really helpful statement?  Considering he replied to himself twice without a word from anyone, at least he knows he's not being ignored.  Maybe I can't help, but he's not in it alone.

Well, I guess talking to yourself is ok, as long as you don't answer yourself :)

I noticed some samba updates in synaptic, maybe things will be ok now.

Hope so.  For both of you.  I don't have the setup to try.   :)

OK final solution.  It is not pretty.

Re-install with printer connected.  Everything worked and configured.  No hangs.  No Printer Drake menus grayed out or unresponsive.

Re_install without printer connected.  Printer Drake takes forever to come up first time with a new dialog I have not seen.  It shows no printers connected but gives the ability to configure printers connected to other machine on the local network.  However, the configuration tool is not able to see the printer on the other machine on my local network even if I give the IP.  After that, the Printer Drake application falls back to being unresponsive and the CUPS service stops with the option to start at boot unchecked and the service will not start backup even if you check the start at boot and re-boot.

Finally, I re-install again with the printer connected.  Install goes without event and the printer is configured after the install and PrinterDrake is happy.  Move the printer back to the other machine and voila the new install can now see the printer on the other machine.

I repeated this a second time.

Install is 2010.1 on i686 with 2G ram and 160GB hard drive dedicated to linux.

SOLUTION: make sure you have a printer hard wired on the computer when installing.

And I thought this was the wireless age.  NOT.
