"if anyone is interested in freebsd its really easy to setup as oppose to linux distros, the installer is very intuitive."

this goes against the rules of the forum if i understand correctly

i'm sorry you couldn't enjoy pclinux with your hardware, pclinux is not perfect but is very good for many many users but is impossible that it works on every hardware combination available, specially with older agp ports with errors(specially via and nvidia)

other distros will work because some of them use xfree86 or specific patches(what brings many other problems)

sometimes is just that they use vesa driver and you don't notice that because you didn't tried 3D stuff or watch hd videos, you can't say that something works by just installing it and using it for 10 minutes, we use pclinux 24/7 for years and we know how well it responds

^ you got it wrong, i did change the resoulution, and it didn't work properply like its suppose to.

it works on windows, works on freebsd, works on other distros. jeez i wonder why it doesn't work properly with pclinux.

i had to use the monitor's hard coded settings just to align the screen back correctly everytime.

qwert12345,

The 9600 works fine, the ' thing' is that you 'did wrong' is you tried to use the graphical server from the ati site, for a card that is no longer supported by ati, within an operating system where is not recommended to go outside the repository.

PCLinuxOS is a little different from the other distros - its a rolling distro, all the parts work together to be greater than the sum of its parts, this is why partial updates and installing externally  can be detrimental

Rather than get defensive, and I can read that its not just one person being defensive, why not try the LiveCD - with the default ATI xserver (which can be tweaked), and if it fails to work THEN ask for assistance

One of the things that happens when you are familiar with multiple OS's be it a BSD, Solaris, Haiku, Linux or any one of the other myriad of OS's out there is that on occasion there comes  situation that you are aware of  a solution that works in 99% of he other OS's, but unfortunately fails to work in the one you need it to, I would suggest that this is one of those occasions.

Another point that has been raised is that the promotion/pushing of a given distro or OS is outside of the rules of the forum, this is true, and I ask you to refrain any further, general speak is ok, if you want to say how good any given os is , I am sure that they have a Testimonials section on the forum for that OS, if they don't then suggest one.

I hope you give it another shot, and should things not work the way you think they should then ask we are here to help.

the right driver is x1950 and earlier, it covers cards from ati 9600(or 9800? can't remember)
Does it support 3d effects?

I also have radeon 9600.
I tried to set 3d effects on current pclinux installation on one of my old PCs.
3d doesn`t work by activating in control center.

Driver from ATI site gives an error

Quote
which: no XFree86 in (/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec:/usr/lib/qt4/bin)

Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version
default:v2:i686:lib::none:2.6.32.11-pclos2.bfs; make sure that the version is being
correctly set by --iscurrentdistro

So what is conclusion, is there some patches or other way to make 3d effects  work?

"Does it support 3d effects?"

it does for my ati 9200

"Driver from ATI site gives an error"

that driver doesn't work with current distros(this card has been unsuported in linux for at least 2 years),  the card is unsupported with current xorg or xfree86

you basically damaged the pclinux installation with that driver

you need to use the standard driver

i suggest you to start from a new installation and from there we can do the right steps

"is there some patches or other way to make 3d effects  work?"

3D effects are just compiz, not everybody likes compiz or can give a use for it

some people prefers kde desktop effects, if those doesn't work or if none app using 3d can run, then that is a problem that requires atention

that driver doesn't work with current distros

I see, but I didn`t install driver. Installation stacked at package generation.
This error output was generated after
sh ati-driver-install.run
Do I need to reinstall Pclinuxos after this?

In any case (with reinstalling Pclinux or with current install) what should be the next step to make 3D effects work?

I use e17, so compiz is my only choice.

compiz doesn't work with e17

the 3d option in pcc doesn't allow me to login to e17 when is enabled

can you open a console and write glxgears?  wait 10 seconds and post the results

I loaded composite module, some effects work.
But wobbly windows, folding airplanes, fire don`t.
When i try to activate "Animantion" icon in compiz settings manager it says that regex matching needed.

It gives warning that it needs application or package "regex matching".
I guess other effects don`t work because of lack of proper driver, am I right?

Thanks T6 for halping!

I`ve found solution in this topic
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,81433.0.html

Finaly ecomorph from testing works for me.
Airplanes, FIRE !!!!!! and all effects I dreamed!!!
And it is fester and smoother than composite module which is sluggish and jerky on my old PC.
Even better than KDE on my main PC with  512 ATI videocard.

ecomorph is not part of compiz

your video card is doing 3d as expected  :)
