OK, I give in, why would you want to?   ;D

Your question makes me wonder if it would be possible to use one of those external cases for PATA drives, but in reverse. Take out the circuit board, connect that to the motherboad (via cable) and plug the USB device into it where the USB cable would normally go. There would have to be a power connection too I guess for the USB device.  Interesting .......  but I don't think I would test it on a valuable piece of equipment   ;D

If that is a desktop PC then a PCi card would be the way I would go .....  if it can boot from USB of course.

Maybe some serious searching would turn up what you are looking for as there are all kinds of adaptors these days ........

I was not even aware that they made 250GB sticks  ;D

The 128GB version is €298 plus delivery here .......  I don;t even want to know what price the 256GB version would be  ;D ;D

I think I would buy an SSD drive in smaller size given the option  ;D

I thought about that too, didn't try your method though, but problem was old hardware uses USB 1.1, soooooooooo friggin slow.

But I am tempted on my next build to play around with this idea using a mobo that's USB 3.0 capable, I saw some tests where it was faster than everything but a new SSD HD. Tempted to try an ultra lightweight, ultra fast system, mebbe 6-core AMD, beaucoup DDR3 and no HD, run OS all in ram and save all files to USB.
This aggression will not stand man.

I have used a USB drive mounted internally ......  but with a live OS on it

I plugged it into the back end of a PCI USB card .....  it had 4 USB connections on the back plate and one internal connection also.

Was interesting to play with ...

I'm still tryin' to wrap my mind around why? If you can't make usb work via a usb port in bios...is this one of those...let's see if deals?

Talk about retro-tech.  ??? IDE/usb ?

This is NOT a criticism... it just seems like more time/money/frustration than it is worth.

Yet, I have been schooled before.  :o

I haven't had that problem in the last few years, but it is possible to start the boot with something else and then hand off to the USB ....  not sure how universal that solution might be.

It might be owrth looking into ....

I suspect that it is a motherboard/bios issue and leave it at that. Really, I do admire the ...let's see if attitude, but I think that it's a lost cause.

Again, if you can make it happen...I will be impressed.  8)

whoa, first of all,  if you have some REAL cheap, from a friend, to a friend ;) me, send a bucket over, i ll pay you back for the freight and some beer drums (full and chilled ones, of course). i found a price tag of 550 pounds sterling, and thats many many euros and even more dollars ;)

about the idea, the data flow would not be a bottleneck there, but rather a cpu or ram, in case you get lucky and have it work.
in case the motherboard is SO old, it wont be having not even usb gen 1, but only a pci raiser/card could work, maybe, in case you get lucky with the bios. if not, then some old lilo stuff maybe, then get transfered to cd or straight to pci storage (your usb mounted stick).

dont think the cable ide to usb reversed would work, since no drivers on dead system to use the usb, and you WOULD need to manually amend the wiring, i guess (im not familiar, but thinking the worst case, like send receive, ground etc like in serial/parallel/LAN cabling).
maybe, just maybe.

btw, i had to check on the kingston home that 256gb stick was not a hoax ;)

damn, its true, and i thought my 32gb survivor meant business ;) (keep forgetting its an almost 2 year deal now)

so, as i said, id go lilo, if i remember well, since no cd boot was available on the rig i was playing with, that would hand over to cd, once drivers there, kernel on cd, forward to usb (just brainstorming now).

anyway, the data thruput and the overall usability of the machine that old is IMPOSSIBLE to use well of the 256gb. one more, if youre lucky, you dont get data storage size limit in bios ;)

he he, have mighty fun, italians would say, rompi coglioni on this one ;)
