PCmanFM and external memory devices.
« on: October 15, 2010, 08:28:23 AM »
This seems to be another minor bug in the PCmanFM update.

When I plug in an external memory device such as an MP3 player, camera or memory stick, and wish to remove it I right click and then click on unmount or eject (sometimes I get one sometimes the other, seems to depend on the device), sometimes the list of contents on the screen disappears when the action is completed and other times it doesn't.

E.g. I have just added some files to my MP3 player and when I ejected it, the entry in the left panel vanished, but the file icons stayed.  I plugged it in again and ejected without doing anything and this time both went.

I hate inconsistency!

When you are going to unmount, click the back button until you are in the folder you opened the device in. Unmount and you will see "emptiness."

Hi,
This is an issue I haven't met with, but with what you say I think it could be studied further.

Would you tell us what preferences are selected in Menu > Edition > Preferences > Volume Management, and then close PCManFM, start it from a console (just invoke "pcmanfm" as is) and repeat the steps that make you meet with left icon disapearance while file icons are still there ?

If the same bug happens, what is in the console as messages and do a screeshot too ?

When you are going to unmount, click the back button until you are in the folder you opened the device in. Unmount and you will see "emptiness."

Howard, is it that the directory which is displayed is changed to elsewhere, (your home ?) or is it the files that are in the usb stick or mp3 stick that are displayed ?

// I noticed a tendency of PCManFM 2 that does not refresh the directory which is displayed, sometimes.
// PCManFM 2 is a 0.9.7 version, much better than the former 0.5.2 that has been recoded from scratch, but it's not a 1.0 yet, so each bug reported will help the developer to improve it.

If I mount a usb stick, open a folder in the stick and unmount from there, the files in that folder are still shown. If I click back and unmount, this does not happen.

Oh I see... I wouldn't have thought using the automount this way. I am usually out of the mount directory when I unmount it, sometimes at the root directory...

I'll give it a try, for curiosity.

I just tried now, from there:
/media/UDISK/Documents/Informatique/Configs-Openbox-Archlinux/sakura

so it's deep inside right ? I had to unmount 2 times in a row to get the right click on usb icon to switch "umount the volume" to grey and see "mount the volume" in black. The mount command also confirms that the usb device is not mounted.

The /media/UDISK/Documents/Informatique/Configs-Openbox-Archlinux/sakura/sakura.conf is still visible : I think this might be due to a bug, related to PCManFM that does not refresh.

→ recently I had to transfer file "foo" to the usb stick from another machine and then once plugged in my laptop I didn't see this file on the stick : but opening the console in the directorys showed obviously that the file was there. When I changed directory, or when I closed pcmanfm and restarted it (don't remember what I did, but one of theses 2) then I could see the "foo" file.

it keeps showing the mounted object till it is removed even after it is unmounted and the reason it shows an empty window is because it is unmounted

Sorry Scoundrel, your present statement is not very clear to me. It looks like you are saying more or less one thing and it's opposite.

I unmount from the media root directory : window empty → normal behavior
I unmount from the media in a subdirectory : window not empty → abnormal behovior, or at least can let us ask questions about it.

I can confirm Neal's observations.  The file list only disappears from the main pane if the device is unmounted when the manager is at its root level.  Otherwise the list remains, but if you try to go up to the root level you get  a message that the device doesn't exist.

Sometimes on right clicking I get an unmount option, other times I get an eject option (I cannot see any logic in this.)  In the first case the device remains in the list in the left pane, but if it's ejected that goes too.

If I try to remount a device I have just unmounted the list does not re-appear, but if I go up to /media and down again there they are.

Clearly some more work needs to be done before version 1.0 is released.

Now can I get some response to my earlier question about not obtaining information when "hovering" the cursor over the file name as in KDE3.5 konqueror?

If I had an answer, I'd respond. I don't know why that is happening. :-\
The only thing I can say is that you can't expect PCManFM to be konqueror. They are different.

I'm not expecting PCmanFm to be Konqueror, I just want an easy way to see the titles and comments in the headers of MP3 files.  Any software will do.

My response came out different than I intended.  :(

Have you tried clementine? Or listen?
