Fujitsu-Siemens laptop: X server problem with Gnome-2010.7
« on: October 15, 2010, 05:56:14 AM »
I've been given a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop, model AMILO-Pro V2030D WL1, which runs XP and is incredibly s l o o o o w. No sweat, thinks I, just a problem with Windoze getting clogged up as usual, will pop PCLOS-Gnome onto her and off she'll go. Well... not quite  ::) !

At a certain point in the live-CD boot process the following messages occur:
Code: [Select]
acpid: client connected from 3090[0:0]
acpid: 1 client rule loaded
acpid: client rule disconnected
acpid: client connected from 3141[0:0]
acpid: 1 client rule loaded
acpid: client rule disconnected
and then
Code: [Select]
Failed to start the X server.
It is likely that it is not set up correctly
....

I've looked at the logs provided, but they mean absolutely nothing to me; I also have no idea how to adjust the various settings    offered  :( . All of the live-CD boot options have been tried and each ends with the same error-message.

Looks like the problem with XP could be a display-hardware fault. Has anyone out there had a similar problem and solved it; if so, how? Thanks.

Ok, from the command-line (which is all you appear to have), try
Code: [Select]
startx
If this still fails, type
Code: [Select]
su to switch to root access, giving
Code: [Select]
root as the password. Then run
Code: [Select]
pcc to run the PCLOS Control Center. Go to setting up your graphics server, and try some settings, testing first before exiting, to see if you can get to work. I had similar issue with a laptop, was a matter of setting better resolution for the screen, then it seemed to work fine. Good luck. :)
There is no shame in saying "I don't know".

Thanks, but the machine doesn't get as far as a command line. It now gets to the Gnome desktop but with no icons, although the top and bottom bars are there. It then hangs (with the mouse-pointer still moveable) and the only option is to switch it off. I've tried a few hot-keys but, to be honest, I lack knowledge in that area. Intend to strip it down to try to establish where the hardware problem may lie.

if your live cd performs without trouble on it, it is configuration problems youre having, and not hardware failures
