Sorry for my stupid part in this little dust-up. Back on topic, you may want to consider this: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,81324.msg674241.html#msg674241

The only laptop I opened recently was a Dell and there is no way the dust I found inside could have been removed without opening the cover over the heatsink, taking out the heatsink and then blowing and brushing it.

I replaced it after cleaning the paste from it & CPU, and applied new paste before fitting.

It would be a surprise to me if there was no dust caught in the heatsink unless the PC is new.
That no dust emerged when blowing might indicate that no dust was disturbed, and not that no dust existed.

Just a thought ......

Opening this case might give it a shot and solve the whole thing, but since that would cost me that 80 EUR, I'm not too keen on that option right just now. If I could find some Torq-screwdrives (is it really written like that?), then I might give it a shot myself.

We spell that "Torx" out here, and they aren't very hard to come by, nor very expensive.

Also not hard to come by are the instructions for HP laptops, at least most of the time. Search their web site for your make and model. They publish PDF manuals for my laptops that are so detailed that the screws that hold the case together are mapped in an illustration by size. It's nice to know how to pull it apart in case something else goes south, too; even if a clean-up doesn't fix your problem, at least you will gain some practice. ;)

Hello,
I have a laptop in pieces at the moment and the fins on the processor heat exchangers are clogged with crud.It will blow off with an air line or compressed air that can be directed at it now it is out of the case.Once any other dust is removed from the fan blades themselves upon re-installation using thermal paste it should be good for another long while. The muck cannot be simply be blown out without dis-assembly first.
If that was the case a fan reversal would be built in to all machines.(No pun intended.)

If there's a harder way to do something I'll probably find it.

Yesterday I managed to get my case open. I saw the fan, but couldn't remove it since the engineer who designed this thought it would probably be a good idea to cover the CPU under everything else. Blew some air there and vacuumed it as much as I could. Case closed for now..?
