Big trouble updating a new Enlightenment Install
« on: October 10, 2010, 07:47:48 AM »
I had earlier asked a question about Enlightenment which I had installed along with my Gnome install. I decided just to do a fresh install of Enlightenment as a guest in VirtualBox. However, the .iso is very old now and when I went to update it, there were 600 pkgs to download and install. The download part wasn't an issue as I am running on a 35Mbit fiber line and only takes a couple minutes. The problem is, I have tried twice now to update it. The first time it dropped into the tty screen and sat on the localhost login line and I didn't know if it was ever restarting on it's own or not. The second time I tried, (after re-re-installing) E-17 crashed about halfway in with a message about recompiling my kernel with some flag or other. I also noticed, although I have the PUEL version of VirtualBox and installed the guest additions, during the update it seems to insist on installing the OSE additions. I've never had this much trouble just updating.

Is the .iso so old I can't update the install successfully?

the install seems to work fine btw.

If you still have your second install in VB try adding a new user and log in to e17.
e17 went from unstable to beta since that iso was made so you might have to reset your configuration.

and installed the guest additions, during the update

Wonder if its coz you did the install during the update - I tend to do all the updates (reboot/restart)  and then install any new apps, especially things like VBox and VBox guest additions as I believe they need to build themselves into the system when the reboot occurs.

actually I have E-17 running fine when I added it to a gnome install I already had. I was just making a fresh VM from scratch, or trying to. I have tried 4 times now from the e-17 iso that was released back in april i guess, I'm not sure what the issue is. I mean I have 15 different guests running in VirtualBox including one with PCLinuxOS with both Gnome and E-17 installed, and one with openbox and XFCE installed. I have also had The Fluxbox and Zen versions. I am just starting to think the E-17 .iso is too old.

ok, well finally figured out what was going on. it turns out all of the .isos and probably the update packages as well from: "http://ftp.uwsg.indiana.edu/linux/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/" are screwed up. I downloaded three .isos from there and none matched the checksum. clearly is something going on with that mirror. I just wish I had thought to check earlier. I don't bother normally because I have a very fast line and in downloading 30+ .isos, plus large software from online, I never had an issue. live and learn.

an adendum to this, I looked at a few mirrors and it turned out several of them had different MD5 checksums for the e17 .iso. and I tried downloading a couple which didn't end up matching the checksum either. I finally got one from one server that matched it's checksum and it too wouldn't correctly install. I also had to try 3 mirrors before I found a copy of Zen that would install. I've never seen anything like this before.

btw, I just got the email notice of the reply that I posted three days ago today
