LXDE update gives problems with MP3 player files. SOLVED
« on: October 10, 2010, 06:15:39 AM »
My wife uses a Sansa C250 MP3 player to listen to mp3's of radio programmes that I download for her.

This model does not appear to have a "delete" option in its software (my later Sansa Clip does), so I have always had to delete files using a computer.  No problems, until now.

After the update the delete option "removes to trash" instead of deleting.  But this it where it's got its wires twisted.  As far as the computer is concerned the files are in trash, and come up when I click on Trash in the left panel of PCman, but I cannot delete them from there, it says they don't exist.  In the MP3 player itself they are still present and working.  Unmounting the player removes the files from the trash folder, remounting brings them back, so they are somehow marked as trash but still on the player.  The player just seems to see them as regular files - there is no trash folder on it.

I switched to my old trusty KDE3.5 installation but that couldn't see the trashed files either.

How do I get rid of these files?

You could initially try using shift+del  to by-pass the trash bin altogether
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.4; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.4.38bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Try to restore them from the trash. Then in PCManFM > Edit > Preferences uncheck the line Move deleted files to trash bin... Now delete your files and they will be deleted.

If you want or need the trash function for other files, you will need to recheck the line Move deleted files to trash bin... after.

I tried that Neal, but restore doesn't work, I get a "No such file or directory" message even though it appears in the Trash folder list.  They are still there on the C250 software though.

Maybe I'll try Windows XP.

I ran some tests on this with a usb stick. The way I overcame it was to log out and back in after making the changes in PCManFM, mounted the stick and the files were restorable.

That didn't work for me Neal, but something made me think of hidden folders.  So I looked and found a .trash-500 folder on the MP3 player.  I could delete from that.  Now I have the trash option switched off.

Xp was useless, didn't really recognise the player at all.  It seems that the C250 firmware has been causing a lot of problems.
