How to run meta-packages
« on: October 09, 2010, 12:04:34 PM »
How do you run meta-packages, the packages in synaptic with task- in front of them? After installing one through synaptic, no changes take place.

Which did you install? More info would help us to help you. Was the meta package another DE? If so, to use it log out, choose it as your session and log in. Was it something else? Give us as much info as you can.

The meta-package was task-multimedia. I installed it because my sound wasn't working. Is it already installed? Or do I have to run a program to install it, similar to the OpenOffice Manager?

What  meta-package did you install and which changes did you expect?

To give an example: if you install task-gnome while running KDE you won't see any immediate changes, but the next time you log in you will have a choice between logging into KDE or Gnome. Installing some meta-packages (usually without the "task" prefix) you'll just get a number of applications that you could also install one by one. (Installing the kdeutils4 will give you all the kdeutils packages at one fell swoop.)

Is it that your sound isn't working or that you could not play media?

Please give us some details. Describe your hardware, especially your sound card.

task-multimedia has nothing to do with getting your sound working. That is probably a hardware issue.

Open PCC (on your panel, the icon is a crossed wrench and screwdriver in a blue circle) > click on Hardware > Sound configuration. You can set options here. You may want to try a different driver or enable / disable pulse-audio.
You can use the forum's search function to see if anyone has had a similar problem and if a fix was posted. Try using Intel 82801H as your search term.

If this does not help you, please start a new thread with a title that shows you are having sound problems. This will get attention from those who can help you with sound issues.
