<SOLVED> Windows Killed Grub
« on: October 09, 2010, 08:46:56 AM »
Strange thread title but basically what happened.

I searched for the same problem before I started this thread but couldn't find and answer. If this has been answered , could someone point me to the thread.

Recently, just for fun and the experience, I installed PCLOS and Windows XP on a laptop I had. It was quite easy to do. I loaded Windows first then PCLOS. Doing it that way Grub picked up the Windows install and left me with a nice clean choice at boot up. I have had no problems. It has worked very well.

Very well until Windows decided to kill itself. I almost never used it so I guess it got fed up and committed suicide.
In reality it got corrupted for no apparent reason. (GEE what a surprise). I could have spent time repairing it but it was a new install anyway so I didn't have much to lose by reinstalling. Or so I thought.

I used gparted and reformatted that partition to NTFS. Routine so far.
I shut down and put in the Windows install disk and installed it uneventfully.
I rebooted and it booted straight into Windows. I didn't panic because I knew PCLOS was still there and I used a usb  version to check it out. It was there intact so I knew what the problem was.

Obviously grub has to be reconfigured to account for the new windows install.
The problem is I am not sure what I need to add to Grub to make this happen.

Could someone of superior intelligence please help me out and give me the proper lines to add.
I sure would appreciate it. Thank you very much.

Hmm, what about firing up the Live CD (Installer) and then run "Redo MBR".

Could someone of superior intelligence ...
Yeah! That's me! (kidding)

Try Redo Mbr from LiveCD session, it should add a stanza for your Windows to PCLOS's grub menu. ;)

Ohh yeah, bicol_willem beat me to that ;)

It worked perfectly. It is back to normal. Thanks again.

I feel so stupid because I know about redo MBR but wasn't sure it would be the way to go in this case, but obviously it was. Should have just tried it. But no worry the good citizens of the PCLOS forum to the rescue.

That is what makes this forum so great. Oh, and of course uncleV. ;D
