NEED of using PSU even when using laptop with external hdds
« on: October 06, 2010, 09:48:27 AM »
i just got reminded of importance of using the PSU for all devices (less printers, etc) connected to my machine, which in turn is a laptop and has charged battery to act as supply failover, but the hdd connected to it, doesnt have a separate fail over power supply ;)

luckily i went to transfer some linux images from one drive to another (irony is, to a folder named check since originated from a fragmented ntfs drive ;) ), so no big harm- only one file is affected ;) and can be redownloaded...

situation in specific: the power company opted to do a milisecond blackout, it was barely visible, but the modem reset, phone connected to it reset, tv went off, etc, comp hasnt due to its battery on and charged, BUT the transfer was off, reported error and disks unmounted ;)

so, just as a reminder to everyone, feel NOT safe when using the laptop with external storage connected needing a separate power supply (not the usb stuff)

regards

ps: any advice on home made brew regarding this? i wouldnt like buying a proper psu just for this, cause it happens really very rarely.

Get a UPS and this would not be an issue. All my machines are connected to a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)

Not only a UPS, I would suggest a pure sine wave one. The cheapy UPS you'll find will output a modified sine wave which means they are (essentially) a stepped sine wave and the supply power is extremely noisy for a sensitive device such a computer.

Go all out and get a pure-sine with continuous-online-inverter feature. The cheaper ones that engage and switch on when the incoming power is out of tolerance can still generate a spike in the power despite the very fast switching mechanism. The online ones provide good power, all of the time, no matter what. Batteries withstanding.
