Firefox is very slow on PclinuxOs
« on: October 03, 2010, 09:04:33 AM »
Seems Firefox is calling in a lot of junk before it will execute.
It has slowed the internet access way down.
Running V 3.6.10

Am I the only one having this annoyance?

Slow to load on all my machines, windows especially, of course. If not for add-ons I like,  I think, I'd try other browsers like chrome on my boxes soon.

Sometimes it happens with pclinux.com/forum.

I've tried an hour ago Opera and even the simple Links - delays, yeah.

When firefox first came out its speed was the thing that drew me to it, but it seems that every revision has gotten slower and slower. I still use it as my primary browser because of the youtube download helper, but its almost gotten to the point of being unusable.

I just keep waiting for something to change for the better

firefox is popular for its speed loading pages and quality on doing it but i don't remember it for being fast to load, only when you have it with none configuration, skins, bookmarks or addons is fast, from there if becomes slow

if you want speed to load the app itself, opera or chrome is a better option, if i couldn't use firefox i would use opera

Firefox v3.6.10 seems very speedy in loading pages to me. I just loaded several pages using Firefox, Iron and Konqueror( Webkit & KHTML).  Firefox and Iron appeared both equally speedy.  Konqueror using Webkit seemed a slightly quicker than KHTML. All, however were acceptably quick in loading pages from my very quick test.

Lately I have been using Konqueror and Iron.

Over on Windozzzz I find that Kmelion is very fast.
To bad it can't be used in PcLinuxOS.
The PcLinuxOS Firefox is the pits and I need something
in PcLinuxOs to replace it.
I imagine much advertised Firefox 4 won't be any better.

In my experiences. Its not slow loading pages. It IS a bit slow loading up which I admit may be due to plugins & add-on's. But the more serious issue I noticed with this latest version is that it seems to suck alot more resources than before.

I tried Chrome before. But it proved to be just as bad in my case.

Try thoroughly emptying out the cache and browsing history.  Firefox does tend to be slow to load, and has been throughout the 3.6.x release on every OS that I've used it on.  Cleaning it out generally helps alleviate this, particularly after updates.

Just chiming in to add to DB.

Same here, Firefox slowed down so much for me it was almost like running 56k again, switched to Iron a few weeks ago and now run it on every machine, tested both on Peacekeeper, Iron was almost 200% faster, and it definitely shows when browsing. Opera runs pretty fast too, I just don't like it, and don't like my browsing being tracked by Google, so I don't use Chrome.

Humble opinion only, YMMV. ;)

I agree with much of what's been said here. Firefox is slow on linux (not PCLinuxOS specifically though) and not just KDE, Gnome too. I remember an episode of The Linux Action Show where they talk about Firefox and how the very first thing they do upon a fresh install of their favorite distro is uninstall Firefox and everything just "feels" faster.
Firefox is like a mini OS now. I think it takes almost the same amount of time to load Firefox as it does to boot my computer. Though it is true that it is mostly because of the addons. But what is the point of using Firefox without addons? Using Firefox without the addons is like throwing the baby out with the bath water. I too keep waiting for some update or future release hoping they will "fix" it.
I'm now posting from Konqueror which is fast and really does have a a lot of great features built in to it now.
