Icons with a mind of their own
« on: October 03, 2010, 04:48:02 AM »
Hi there

I'm pretty new to PCLinuxOS (or at least, this latest release) but been using Linux for a while now. I've installed PCLinuxOS 2010, KDE 4.5.1 version, a week ago and am trying to get used to its little foibles but there are a couple of things that I've not managed to work through yet so am seeking the views of the forum on it.

Firstly, desktop icons. I've used the 'add to desktop' function to create desktop icons for a few apps, then moved them around to my liking (then did the 'lock widgets' again). But performing seemingly random actions like emptying the recycle bin or saving a text file on the desktop moves them around again. Sometimes a reboot moves them back, sometimes it doesn't.

Secondly, I've placed a spacer between some of the icons on the panel so that the application launcher menu, desktop configuration, synaptic etc icons are all on the left of the spacer then the icons for running or minimized tasks are all on the right. I do that to keep launch icons and running app icons separate. That's fine except that, when I reboot, the desktop pager icon (where you switch between desktop 1 and 2) always moves itself to the right of the spacer where I want it on the left. Same with the calender widget; I want it on the right of the clock widget but it always moves itself on rebooting to the left. These are no biggies, to be honest, but just irritating me right now.

Thirdly, and I don't know if this is linked, if I leave the computer for a while then come back to it the monitor sometimes shows a black screen with an 'out of range' moving around. I guess the computer is sending the monitor some sort of display data that it cannot handle and there appears to be no way out expect to reboot (or at least, not one I've found). Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when this happens but it's occurred about 3 times in the last week.

Sorry for the deluge of questions but I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

Adrian

Welcome adrianp  ;)

Your first problem was a bug and has been fixed in KDE SC 4.5.2 which has been sent to the PASS repo and should be in the public repositories soon. There are quite a few threads about this on the forum. If you search for it, you'll find the info.
This was the announcement on Tex's identica (also on his twitter account)

Good news!!!

On http://identi.ca/pclinuxos:
KDE 4.5.2 seems to fix the desktop icon reset issue. Thank gawd!

A lot of people have been having issues with icons on desktops and panels that may be dealt with in KDE SC 4.5.2 which is coming very soon. Sorry, I can't help with your other 2 issues but have you tried searching the forum?

Thanks Timeth for your comments. I've waited a bit before coming back because I just updated to the latest KDE 4.5.2 version. Touch wood, that seems to have fixed it and both desktop and panel icons have now settled down over several days and several reboots. I've also not had the monitor problem either so KDE 4.5.2 seems to have saved the day!

See this post and scroll down to Tex's information:

I removed the trashcan, clicked the cashew, added a new trashcan
widget and locked it in place.
When emptying the trashcan, it stays put as do other icons,
hope that helps.

Nope. Been there, done that. Just creating a test text file on the desktop dumped all the icons. Reset icons and move text file to trash, all the icons are moved again. Reset yet again, empty trash. One guess where all the desktop icons are, once again.  ;)

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Just a thought re saving settings,
Can there be a difference between  kde4.5.2 in a virtual box rather than a 'proper' install?
