Hi, I recently raised a problem under "Can't start Dolphin or Konquerer in standard mode, which hasn't been resolved, and I now realise it's much bigger than that topic.
As I said under that topic:
"I've done a couple of updates recently, and it was after one of them that the trouble started. ...
I'm now suddenly getting this message on trying to start both Dolphin and Konquerer: "Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_file'. "
(I can however start and use both these programs in Super User Mode.)
I can't work out any other way to move files to e.g. removeable media, which don't seem to show up in the Super User Mode.
When I try to open Wastebin I get: "Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_trash'. "
Synaptic does not indicate any problems with any files.
Presumably I need to re-install KDE? If so, how?? ...
I'm discovering more and more things which come up with the dreaded message - e.g. the "Home" icon on the desktop."
_steve kindly made a couple of suggestions, which haven't fixed this:
a) The problem sounds to me like you don't have ownership of your files in /home/youruser/
If you have access to a terminal (eg konsole) you might try (as root)>
chown -R youruser:youruser /home/youruser/
(of course substitute whatever is correct for youruser)
su to root
chown -R rud:rud /home/rud/
(assuming your username is rud)
b) Check you don't have "run as different user" set in KDE edit menu .... it should be blank...
goto> right click mouse PC button> Menu Editor> File Tools> Dolphin
It now seems clear that KDE is completely stuffed up, and presumably needs a reinstall; I cannot access any files, even to attach them to GMail. I haven't dared to reboot (last was before the updates), in case KDE doesn't reappear.
By searching for KDE in Synaptic I get libkdeeduui4, which is said to be "Graphical desktop/KDE4 Graphical desktop/KDE4"
BUT I can't mark this to reinstall - it already is marked. All I could do is mark to uninstall - but if I do that, will the whole desktop fall over before I can reinstall?? Or will it stay in memory so that I can reinstall??
Help!!
